The other day a friend and I tried to hook our computers up via an Ethernet cable so we could play Age of Empires together. However, things did not work. :(

I have a router connected to the internet, and the router connects to my computer via a USB cable. So we had:

Internet > Router > My computer > His computer.

    Are we missing something?

Why don't you just connect both computer in the routers Ethernet ports and put both computer in the same workgroup?

    What is you OS?

You had set up an ad-hoc network I think. That won't work. You need to have it like this...
Cable > Modem > Router > Both your computers (via ethernet, not usb).
Also, that USB port on the router is only used to set up the router. You can't use that for networking as far as I know.

The router only has one Ethernet port.

I'm using Vista Home Premium with SP1

I think we need the USB. I unplugged it and we lost all our internet!

So you are saying both computers need to be directly hooked up to the router?

(I know much less than I thought!)

My router says ARESCOM NETDSL 800. I think it came with our MSN internet cause there is an MSN logo on it.

A new router is needed perhaps?

Yes, connect both of them, use the extra Ethernet port.

When you access (using IE or FF) the router/modem, you have a configuration user interface, where you can change the settings of the router/modem.

For a moment I thought I had it figured out! Not so much... Haha.

I've been poking around Firefox and can't find this configuration page you mentioned.

Assuming you have a router, type on the url bar 192.168.1.1, or 192.168.0.1 and press enter. Other routers have other addresses, though.
