My network is showing up as either a very strong 11 Mbps or a very weak 54 Mbps (alternating between the 2).

I have no problem with this except that the connection is not very good most of the time in terms of d/l speed.

Any ideas what is causing these problems? My roommate is using the same router with no trouble.

In case this helps it also is switching to "acquiring network address" a ton. Is there possibly some kind of conflict when both me and my roommate are trying to get on?

It almost sounds like you are switching between networks, are you using the windows utility to connect to the network?? You might want to try and use the card utility, most notebook manufacturers provide one where you can set priority to one network. Although the windows network should pick the best signal. Might want to detail the problem slightly more for people to help solve. Also which card are you using?

I'm using the Windows utility but it's not switching between networks. It's staying on my linksys here in the house but showing up as either a weak 54 or a strong 11 all the while constantly acquiring network address and not generally working well.

I'm pretty new to wireless so if there's other info I should give lemme know. The card is the Intel PRO in the Dell e1505.

hmm, have you updated to the latest drivers? Also are you broadcasting with a WEP encryption or is it open to the public? (if its open you may want to look into creating a network key to keep outsiders out). It shouldn't be a problem with you and your buddy using the network. And you said his works fine so my guess would be that it is your network card. Try updating the drivers first and see how that goes. Im assuming that you are not moving the laptop around while gaining and losing signals?

So yeah I've got the latest drivers off the Dell site and I'm running Intel's wireless utility now as well.

Same exact problem. It shows the router as being 802.11b or 802.11g (only router on my list that says this) and it's all over the place.

Perhaps you could just change the settings on your routeritself to only broadcast g (mine can). I would be more of workaround than a solution but mught help.

Might want to see if there is a firmware update for your router. Also make sure it is placed correctly like not next to your computer or anything electronic.

Try this if you haven't done it already.
*Go into your control panel and click on Network Connections.
*Then click your wireless connection and click the properties button.
*Then click on the configure button where it says "Connect to:" and then lists your card.
*Click on the advanced tab and scroll down to the option that says wireless mode.
*Click on wireless mode and uncheck the button that says "use the deafault value".
*Change the little drop down box to G only.

See if that fixes the problem.
