Least expensive way is with an ethernet crossover cable
(If both machines have ethernet adapters)
next would be the get a router or switch
Setting up a network is not that hard
    Many routers come with instructions
I do not know if the Msoft transfer cable can be used as a
network but it can transfer files etc

Ultimately if you have high speed dsl you are going to want to
Play on-line so it would seem the best choice would be
a router BTW if you have dsl check to see if it has a built in
    router and additional ethernet plugs!
