Hi,
I'm trying to connect my HP laptop to my cable modem (I go through Roadrunner) via an ethernet cable and it comes up as Unidentified Network (Local access only). I've tried rebooting the cable modem by turning it off for a period of time, as well as rebooting my PC, but I can't get it to connect. I spoke with Road Runner support, and they couldn't help me. Basically they told me to do what I already did. They also said computers with a different MAC address should still be able to connect as long as the modem is rebooted. So thats not the issue.
My desktop has always been the computer that was wired directly to the modem, and the laptop I usually use wirelessly, but I want to also be able to connect directly in. Here is a paste of /ipconfig all from the laptop while connected to the cable modem:

Can someone please help me sort this out? In the Local Area Connection properties I have TCP/IP v6 checked and TCP/IP v4 checked. I have it set to obtain ip address automatically and DNS server automatically.
Thanks! I need to get this working.

Welcome to the forums.
Try disabling TCP/IP v6. When you set up the desktop with the modem, did it need any config tools to get it running? -
I did some more investigating on this today.... and now I know its definitely not a MAC address conflict with computers. The reason is, I tried to connect to my cable modem via USB cable instead of ethernet this morning and after installing the correct drivers, I get a perfect network connection.
When I go back and reset it and try ethernet again, I get that same "Unidentified network" (local only) thing again. The USB connection appears under Local Area Connection (2), and ethernet is plain old Local Area Connection.
It keeps trying to use IP address 169.254.106.58 with the ethernet connection, even though I have automatically obtain IP's checked.
Here is a paste with ipconfig /all when I'm connected via USB cable:

This is so annoying, I just want to be able to use a ethernet cable with my laptop. Thanks! -

Also check your FW, make sure any adapter can connect with your subnet. Or temp turn off till you get it working. -
I would pick up a cheap wired router, clone the desktop MAC address onto it, and then hook your laptop and desktop to the router. Roadrunner will only see the MAC address of the desktop, so your laptop should work perfectly.
I'm not familiar with Roadrunner, so I can't comment on their configurations. Other providers require a MAC address to be on file for each computer or router that will be directly accessing the modem. For example, I had to provide my router's MAC address to my provider before I could access the 'net with my other computers. Once they added my router's MAC address, everything worked perfectly. I could also have cloned my desktop's MAC address (since my ISP had that MAC address on file). -
Nope not it. I can make up any MAC address I want with my router and get a different IP with the modem. I can connect my modem to my laptop with my USB cable and it recognizes my laptops MAC address and assigns certain IP. I can connect my modem to my desktop and it recognizes that MAC address and gives it an IP. I can change my MAC addresses on my computers with Linux using ifconfig. I then get different IP's.
The problem still is, I can't use an ETHERNET cable to connect from my laptop to my modem. -
Please clarify your equipment, like this: modem (make/model) -> router (make/model) -> computers connected to router (make/model).
-
Modem - Teryon TJ715x
Router - D-Link WBR-1310
Laptop - HP Pavilion dv6324us
Desktop - HP Pavilion a320n AMD Athlon -
What is the router revision, and what version firmware is installed? Did you clone your desktop's MAC address to the router, using the router's web based config utility?

Is your FW blocking your Ethernet Port?
