    hi!
i am currently trying to connect to my router using command line access. i have tried telnet and get 'cannot connect through port 23' error, i have disabled all firewalls and tried forwarding the port. i am completely new to this stuff and so have no idea where to go from here. i have seen SSH mentioned in places but have no idea what it is about. any help would be appreciated.

Are you sure your router/firmware supports command line access?

most default firmwares don't. have you flashed to ddwrt/tomato/something else? There's a big linksysinfo forum that deals with aftermarket firmwares.

positive. there are many many many cases of people using command line access with this router, on standard firmwares.

edit: they removed this ability as of 4 firmwares ago... fail.

how do i go about this now ? :)

i have my reason :) i just need to know how to get into the damn thing >:|

i have found out i can do it by rolling back to a firmware 4 updates ago.... but it brings back all the bugs that it had... any way of accessing/doing this with the firmware it has now that doesnt allow CLIaccess?

Not really but since you have nothing to lose you may try to roll 4 firmwares back, disable IDS, flash to the most recent one and do not reset to factory default after that. Chances this is going to work are pretty slim but I see no other way.

Many routers have a failsafe mode where they allow for an install of firmware through sftp (?). However accessing it can be a pain and you need the right firmware to load it, they may not offer it. You also need to know how to access this mode. Usually it's within a few seconds of powering on.

The only other alternative is an aftermarket firmware like DD-WRT.

Am I totally missing something here or has the OP not listed the freaking router make and model?

That's like saying, "My car won't start...let me blindfold you and cut off your hands and then you can fix it."

and although he has found out that his router doesn't support telnet access, he insists that he requires it.

First, don't be such a jerk when people are trying to HELP YOU.

Second, how do you know we do not know the make or model.

Third, if you actually provided the make and model, maybe you increase your chances of someone actually putting little effort in and doing some research

Fourth, since you still have not provided the model, I am done here.

Oh come on- you are the one being impolite not him.
If you don't want to help or feel you cannot do it with the information provided- that's fine but why call anyone a jerk?
    Let's just keep it cool.

    thanks downloads :)

but i bet you did not know the router. it's a UK only one. BT HomeHub V1. i just need to know a way of disabling the IDS without using telnet or similar, and preferably without using older firmware... (although it's looking more and more likely i will need to)

Yeah I've heard of this device- unfortunately mostly bad things.
I've looked at firmware release notes and it seems some genius at BT thought that the best way to remove security vulnerabilities was to disable telnet instead of actually fixing them.
I don't see other way than using 6.2.2.6 firmware. You could think of hardware-hacking it but to be honest it's rather complicated- nonetheless would enable you to use one of SpeedTouch firmwares with telnet enabled.
