Hi, I'm new to the terminology there with this all.

I have a cable modem going to a wired ethernet router. I now have a laptop that I would like to use wireless, on the wired network. What do I need to do this?

I believe that a "Wireless Access Point" will attach to the ethernet router, via RJ-45 cable to one of the router ports. The WAP would connect the laptop wirelessly, at the same time that other computers can access the net on the wired network.

That is correct. Though to cut confusion to a minimum, you could just replace the "wired ethernet router" with a Wireless Router. Pretty much all consumer oriented wireless routers contain at least 4 ethernet ports for wired machines.

do what HAL said, since the settings for the access point method can get messy depending on the manufacturers of your devices (they make it really difficult sometimes) - but you should be able to get even the worst routers to work.

I had just read about the settings needing to be compatible. Thanks!
