I am using a Linksys WRT610N router and have a few laptops around the house that have no problems connecting to it. I have it set up to use WPA2-Personal security. I have one old Sony laptop that will not connect to it though. It's a Sony GRT series that I just completely restored to factory settings. So here's what I know so far.

When I find the network it asks me to type in the key (For some reason Windows thinks it uses a WEP key) and I type the key in and it connects with an excellent signal. But, I can't get to any internet sites. I check IP Config and it gives me a 169.254.x.x address which I know is wrong.

Then I go in to the properties of the wireless netowork and try and set it up to use WPA with TKIP and I type the key in and it doesn't work and goes back to WEP.

If I plug into the router it works fine and also if I open the network I can connect and it works fine. I've even tried to change the network security to a WEP key and it won't work. So now I'm stuck. Anyone have any ideas?

The problem is most likely that the computer in question does not have the software needed to use WPA2, which is distinct from WPA and WEP, both of which it appears to be able to use. You might check to see if there's an update on the _Sony support website that will permit the system to use WPA2.

I thought about that, but if that were the case I would think when I set the network to use WEP it would work but it still doesn't.

I do see there's an update available for the wireless adapter so I will install that and see if it does anything.

I tried to install the wireless card update a couple times today and it installs successfully but then it makes the computer freeze when I try and do anyting.

But I changed the network to be a WEP encrypted and it still can connect but I have no internet connection. I'm just connected to the router with no live internet connection. The only way it works is if I set the network to no security and leave it Open.

    Any ideas?

Ye Gods! XPSP1! You really need to upgrade, all the way to SP3.
