This is my future laptop, now i have to get wireless in my house..

Right now in canada i'm running off of shaw highspeed cable internet, my dads old desktop hes never going to replace i dont even know if it has a wireless card... is there a way to get a router that connects to the ethernet attached directly to the desktop but still sends out a wireless signal so i can access it on my laptop...

Routers are completely confusing to me really... theres a shaw box think that the cable is hooked up too i have no idea... i do know that futureshop advertises wired and wireless routers... which would i go going for?

Sorry for my ignorance in this issue, i just dont want to end up depriving my dad from his internet :D

Was thinking a netgear or linkskey router but not too sure what direction i should take..

Sure. If there is a standard ethernet cable going into the back of your dad's computer, simply plug that into the router. You will need an additional cable to run from the router to the desktop, but the router will send out the wireless signal you need for your laptop. Really no advice for which brand of router, I think the major brands like netgear and linksys all do a good job.

so i'm not going to be crippling anything in the process?... this will be my first laptop and first wireless ever, so confusion is automatic you see lol

    stupid question :p

Should i be buying a N router? or a G router or a !#$!$ Router lol i dont know the difference except that N is newer and by default therefore better..

Yes it can work...u will need to get a router, connect it to the modem that u currently have and run an ethernet cable from the router to the desktop. Whichever router u get make sure it's a "wireless" router.

Edit: a G or an N should be okay. And BTW you'll have to configure the router initially as well...but there are good instructions included so u should be fine.

instructions will be a must for sure :p

For a bit i was thinking of getting the airport extreme from mac for the ease its supposto be to set up but its 200$ versus the 100$ from everyone else

If worst comes to worst i'll have my friends dad come set things up for me, the guys just one of those people who are amazing with electronics

Routers are very friendly, you turn them on and they work almost right away, not a big an extensive process. However you must make a few tweaking with security and other particular adjustments depending on your applications.
