    Hi all,
I'm brand new here having just purchased myself an HP G60 running Vista. So far I'm happy with the machine but the lackluster performance of the Atheros 5009 nic is less then impressive. In parts of my house where my wife's new Dell and her old Toshiba pick up the signal from our Speedstream 6300 the HP drops the call.

I don't do massive amounts of data transfer over the wireless. Those chores are left upto my ethernet wired htpc.

But I do want the freedom to surf and email from throughout the house and the back deck now that I've treated myself to a notebook.

I'm not keen on moving the Speedstream around since it's DSL and I'd like to keep the phone cord connect wire as short as possible. Plus the other notebooks we have work fine with the Speedstream right where it is. All of the ethernet cable I've routed thru the house over the years terminates there as well.

    So potential solutions..

Does anyone make "access point" devices anymore? I do have alot of Ethernet cable running thru the house so this sounds like a good solution. But will I encounter nightmares having 2 access points running?

    or

If I replace the Speedstream with another 802-N capable modem/router will the other laptops running at 802-G bring the router down to G spec and I loose the signal strength advantages of the N spec?

I've already modified the power saving settings in Vista to keep the wireless nic at max power when on battery. I can't find any reference on the web to much else to do with the Atheros nic to improve its signal reception.

Looking forward to learning alot here, and if this info is stuff I should have got with more patience with the search feature, my apologies.

If you are running in mixed mode drop are very common. Try switching over to 11g only and see if that helps any.

Yes AP are still made. But it's just as cheap as to buy another router and set it up as a AP. I have 2 seperate AP/wirelessrouters setup in my house. They are setup independently of each other, opposite ends of my house. This is done so my son does not impact my work. Not setup for Roaming.
