Is it possible to configure a firewall using this router? I'm not very good with networking so I'm not sure how to do this or even if my wireless router is capable of creating a firewall.

Not really configure. Most home routers have just one option- to keep firewall on or off. It's the same with Linksys. Firewall is on by default from what I recall.
Only some firewalls allow you to create rules for certain protocols/ports etc but Linksys WRT54G is not one of them.
It's possible that more advanced firewall with rule creator is available for example in DD-WRT but I can't verify that ATM. Visit their site and check it out if you need it for some particular reason. Other than that you can only log-in to your router and verify that the firewall is on.
