I am extremley new to wireless. I seemed to have gotten my wireless working. Tried many times to no avail. Happened to just change the "Connect to" option and it worked. Tried again with installing the cd that came with my router but with the "connect to" option turned on and it worked. I am now worried that my wireless isn't too secure. I have Norton Internet Security installed, came with laptop. Tried to get into my router and came across WEP and WAP options then choosing a bunch of numbers. All I want to do is secure my wireless that no one can access it, and if so it tells me that someone is accessing it and I have the option to knock themoff. Any help is greatly appreciated

The quickest and simplest way to secure your wireless access point/router is to change the SSID to a unique name. Don't use the default that came with your adapter. The second is to use a WEP (or WAP) data encyrption key. Make sure you remember the key(write it down somewhere). WEP uses a 40 or 64-bit key. WAP uses 128-bit I believe.

I don't use WEP...no particular reason, just don't do anything that confidential often enough to be concerned. However, some steps I've taken that have been pretty helpful:

    - Changed SSID to unique name
    - Changed channel away from default
    - Disabled DHCP
    - Disabled SSID broadcast

MAC Adress filtering is pretty effective too.

    First PC = Vic-20, 8" 128KB Home-Brew Floppy Drive ... Current Rig = eMachines m6805 ... Quantum Leap?
