I've converted my Aspire One into a temporary web/file server. For some reason I cannot get access to it through another network. I can access it via internal ip it's located at 10.0.0.2 and I can access it fine from another computer on the same subnet. A port forward test shows port 80 is open. I have router and modem set to port forward port 80 and the ip is set on DMZ. For Some reason I cant access it through my external IP or my Dynamic Dns service. I've also tryed turning of windows firewall temporarily (I'm using WAMP)

Edit: A year ago I was able to get it working with a different pc, but I don't remember how :D
Also, someone else give it a try: http://michaelsnyder.tk or 74.179.234.93

I read that some routers have problems accessing their own ip
My ip is dynamic, so it don't mind having it public.

Yeah, that's what I figured. I used browsershots and it was able to access it. Anyone have an idea why I can't access it through the external IP?

Well one reason would be if the 'outside network' you're trying to access from is somehow blocking those outgoing connections. Try a different external network?

Oh, I forgot to mention, for the original problem, it was because I had port forward set on the wrong internal ip address and after I fixed it, I only tried my external ip via same network as host.

I don't think doing that would work...afaik you'd have to test that external IP outside the network again to know for sure.

That's true, but I wasn't getting any response from external ip from local or a separate network, so I figured if I could access external from local, it was better than nothing. Still not sure why I can't access it now though. (from my computer) You can also search my ip in google and their spider picked up within an hour

Edit: I'm going to shut it down for the night and fool with it tomorrow. It has to be something with the router, because I was able to view my webpage with an external ip from a computer on the same network last year with a different router. (It's back up now)

What kind of router are you using? Is it using DD-WRT firmware?
Did you uncheck "Block Anonymous WAN Requests (ping)" under the security tab and use port forwarding for the LAN IP configured on the Aspire One?

Does your Aspire One have a static IP address from within your network? You can set this directly on your Aspire One or set it in your router using the Aspire One's MAC address.

Is your DNS service directed to your WAN IP address correctly? Try What Is My IP Address - Shows Your IP Address to see what your WAN IP address is.

Did you setup DNS correctly in your router? Every router has a different setup for DNS services.

Then try to ping your Dynamic DNS and WAN IP address from outsite your network to see if you can ping them.

    -------------------------------

I can remote access to my desktop computer at home (Linksys WRT54G Wireless Router) with a Dynamic DNS ( FreeDNS - Free DNS - Dynamic DNS - Static DNS subdomain and domain hosting) from my work. I setup port forwarding for 3389 in the router, so I can use Window's Remote Desktop Connection. I also enabled Remote Desktop on my desktop computer at home in Windows 7.

For a file server, I would setup a FTP server on the Aspire One and use port fowarding for port 21 in the router. I've never tried setting up a web server, so it could be different in your case.

Im using the Netgear WNR2000 V2. I just installed DD-WRT 30 minutes ago. I have set the aspire one to static internal ip (192.168.1.2). The DNYDNS is working fine it says it's able to update. (I just changed the link on the server to what it's at now. The external IP now is 74.179.234.93) I have remote desktop setup, but I just shared the www folder for easy access to the files. I need to get FTP setup as well. Fortunately this is not new stuff to me, since I have done the same thing with an ancient computer with the AMAZING speed of 300mhz PII but I just need to load the webpage via the external ip or doman from a computer on the same network. Everyone can access the webpage using my ip, but I can't

Maybe I'm not stating my most recent problem clearly. Everyone can make a connection to my server at my house. When I'm on the same network, I can connect to it using it's internal IP. From the same network as the server, I can't access it through it's external IP. For instance, if I enter the external IP (74.179.234.93) on any computer in the same network as the server, I get "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage". I can't ping the external server IP from inside either. Hopefully that makes more sense. It has worked in the past.

That's probably being filtered because it's an "external" request that looks like it's coming from inside the network, which is almost always an attempt at a security breach.

There may be an option on your router to disable that filtering, but I wouldn't recommend it. Is there a reason you need to be able to get to the external IP from internally? You should really just be setting up your own internal DNS that will point at the correct machine.

That sounds likely. I don't really need to access it via ip, but I would like to be able to just type in my domain name at home and view my website for proofing.

Use a dynamic domain name instead of eternal IP, that should work from inside as it has to go out and get the name and ip then route back.

For Whatever reason, it just decided to work. Didn't change a single thing, but it's working without a hitch. Sometimes I just don't understand lol.
