Since day 1 I have been having problems with my NIC in my laptop. Whenever I plug the ethernet cable in, the computer freezes, and doesn't respond to any commands incl ctrl alt del. Turn it off via power switch, unplug ethernet cable, and all is good.

I have tried updating the drivers, and uninstalling the Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC driver and reinstalling it, which worked, great! Until I turn the machine off, and it's back to freezing. Have also tried re-installing xp and wiping the HD (before I figured out the NIC was the prob). Again, a temporary fix until the computer was re-booted.

It is becoming frustrating having to uninstall the driver and restart every time I need to plug in the cable. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

Try a different cable? Perhaps the card is defective.

check ur other network connections - likely that it is being conflicted with one another.
disable the other one by one to eliminate the issue

    cheers ...

Cheers for the replys. I've tried other cables, within my LAN and at mates places- same result.

There is no wireless connection at home, so that isn't conflicting, BUT there is this '1394 connection' that is always connected. Could this be the prob? What is this mysterious 1394 connection? It seems to be always connected, regardless of whether I have a wireless or cable connection running.

    cheers

    Hi Johny

Me too facing the exactly same issue with Wipro Laptop with Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC drivers and on Windows XP. Me too have 1394 connection always connected whenever I plugged in ethernet cable.

How did you solve your issue. It will be great help as I am facing this issue from last 4 weeks and unable to find out the root cause.

    Appreciate your help

1394 is FireWire. It shouldn't be causing your current problem.
