    Hi.

Purchased a v2000 2 months ago and it was working great. Now I can no longer use the built-in wireless. The blue light is on, but it never detects any wireless networks. THis is in several locations, it is not my router, etc.

Spoke to HP/Compaq support, they were useless -- tried system restore points which would always fail, tried uninstalling all the networking drivers and having them reinstalled by XP at system restart -- no use either.

    Help Please!

My AVG antivirus had detected a trojan that it could not remove and I downloaded and ran a-squared free edition and another antivirus program whose name I can not recall at this time which also provided a free firewall (since deleted from my computer as the firewall was over my head).

Prior to it not working completely it would occasionally drop suddenly from 54mbps to 1mbps and i would need to click repair for it to begin functioning well again.

Also prior to it not working completely, it would state no wireless networks found and still allow wireless connection that would simply not be listed anywhere -- going to view wireless networks at that time would list

    ok, hmmm, well...

since you said the laptop can't connect to other systems, i'll assume it's that laptop at fault.

    1. try reseating the wifi card
    2. what wifi config app (not the drivers, the application you configure that card with) are you using? intel? microsoft?
    3. try using the other config app; if you're using microsoft, try using intel (assuming you have the intel card) and vice versa
    4. try uninstalling your wifi config app and reinstalling

also, if that doesn't work just call up HP and have them service the card since it should still be under warranty.

    1. reseating -- it does not appear at all loose
    2. i'm not sure what this means
    3. see 2
    4. see 2 & 3 :)

sorry, all I know is when I got the notebook I turned it on and it worked, not too sure about having to ever config anything.

quikster: I assume you mean having the notebook shipped to HP?

    Thanks guys.

    1. reseating may or may not work whether or not the card feels loose
    2. there are 2 software pieces that go along with a wifi card; the drivers and the application that configures the card (where you enter the WEP key, SSID, etc.)
    3. XP has a built-in wifi configuration application and intel has one too. HP may also have it's own proprietary version. since there are probably 2 apps on your system (the XP version and the HP or Intel version), the suggestion is to try using the other application; the one you are not currently using.

Don't know if this helps but I found when scanning under network diagnostics that the realtek ethernet NIC FAILED.

SUb category dnsserver search order failed
    subcategory 24.153.22.195 failed

ALso ... I tried hooking it up directly to cable and for some reason one gaming site worked, all other gaming sites wouldnt connect and netscape nor explorer would connect.

    Thanks again
