I just switched to Comcast. Their Arris wireless gateway sucks. I couldn't get decent speed if I was more than 3 feet from the router. So I had them but it in bridged mode and added a DD-WRT'ed Linksys WRT54G to provide wireless.

Everything seems to be working fine except I can't log into the Linksys router to change any of the settings. I get a problem loading page error when I type 192.16.1.1. into a browser. I tried connecting to it using an Ethernet cable. Same problem.

However if I disconnect the Linksys router from the gateway I can then log into the router by typing 192.168.1.1 into a browser.

What is going on? Why can't I log into the Linksys router when it is connected to the Arris gateway?

The modem may be on 192.168.1.x itself, so try changing the subnet of your router to anything else like 192.168.2.x

You may want to just go back to comcast and get a plain modem, the bridge mode on their modem/router combos is flaky at best.

Thanks. Should I just buy my own cable modem and save $8/month? If so what should I get? Or is there a better model wireless gateway from Comcast that I should tell them to provide as a replacement?

I am looking for simple that works.

I would suggest providing your own. That $8/mo. adds up quickly.

I don't have Comcast.I have AT&T Uverse with Motorola Modem/router with my own Netgear R7000 router attached.

I went into the Motorola and disabled WiFi > saved and exited.I then attached my R7000.

The router changed my address to 10.0.0.1 to avoid conflicts with the Motorola's 192.168.0.1.All my connected(12) devices have 10.0.0.x adresses including 2 wireless laser printers

I have no lan connected devices.

On my Motorola Modem/router is a sticker with the password to access the settings.

The Motorola was single 2.4ghz band.

The R7000 allows me to connect to my AC devices,Intel AC-7260,Killer N1525,Samsung P900 Tablet and Nexus 5 smartphone) on 5ghz.Two other smartphones and an older tablet connect on 2.4gz.

If you buy your own modem comcast can blame it for signal issues. Make sure you do not have any problems with the wiring from the street to your wall.

For now I would just bring the gateway back and ask for a plain modem. They have a variety of brands so it's hard to ask for a specific model.
