Thought I'd pass this on to others who have Comcast as their ISP...
I like everything about Comcast except the price. I also live in
the Philadelphia area, and with cable service, internet is $42.95/month (ouch!)

If you live in some other area, this may or may not work. Your
mileage may vary, but give it a try...

I got mailers from Verizon and Cavalier for cheap DSL. So I
called Comcast and complained about the price. "I am going to
switch to DSL, what do I have to do to cancel my service...
you're just too expensive..." Without too much hesitation they
offered 12 months for $29.95. They ask "...so the issue is the
price?..." "Yes and that's really the only reason". I got 2-3 other
friends to easily do this too. So it must be an unknown policy.
Took all of 5 minutes. When you call, hit the numbers to
"cancel or downgrade your internet service"

To cancel your service for real, you have to take your cable
modem to the local office, you can't just shut it off on the phone.
And if you own the modem, I think this applies. Just play dumb
    when you call...

They have a deal in Philadelphia for $19.95 for 6 months, so
try and push them for that price. It's getting competitive (finally!).
Cavalier is $25 is you have their phone service.

Guy at local office tipped me off to this when he went to cancel
for real and they offered him this deal. It's only for 1 year
at best, but maybe they'll lower the price.

    Competition good, monopoly bad
