Hi, I am currently in Canada on Telus' ADSL package

I noticed that I can connect quite a number of computers to the router/modem at once, and all of them can download at the maximum speed at the same time

So why can't one network adapter just connect more than once to the router/modem and combine the speeds?

For example, if you are downloading a picture, wouldn't it be possible to split the picture into 5 different parts, have one computer use 5 connections to download each part at maximum speed, and then combine the parts together? Wouldn't this result in 5 times faster speed on one computer?

Depends on if the server will allow you to do that (multiple connections from same IP). You also need software to be able to download and put back together parts of a file.
What is the maximum speed of your Telus connection? and you say that if you have 3 computers, they can all reach the Telus max individually and concurrently?

 I know right! Not possible. One is only provisioned so much at one time.

EDIT* I have seen some setups that combine several modems and tie them all into one trunk, but I highly doubt.... Those are some serious dollar figures! $$$
