I have a gentleman that needs help. He has no home phone and no TV. He bought a Coby Netbook and cannot get it on the internet, can you get a wireless ISP for just the netbook? Any help would be appreciated or direction to a website that gives simple instructions for him?

    Welcome to the forum.

    What's the gentleman's location?

Assuming it's US: any of the four major carriers will sell you an USB stick that provides 3G internet access. The problem is that service plans for these are expensive. Plus, outside major cities, there might be connection issues.

I'd just tell him to get a regular as opposed to a wireless ISP. A wireless ISP only makes sense if he travels a lot.

    He has a few options...

    As mentioned:
Usb WWAN card, which is essentially a cellphone (Cricket is about the cheapest in the US, but make sure there is coverage),

Wireless internet provider; considering the range of wireless in that fashion, if you can get that, you can probably get get broadband another way.

    Other alternatives
DSL, you can get very basic phone service and get DSL. Maybe $40 a month if you work it right.

Cable, I'm sure they will offer internet without TV.

Another option is Directway, which is satellite internet. Have them call their local satellite provider and ask. If they can see the southern sky, they can probably get satellite internet. It's not blazing fast, but it's usable and far better than dial up.

The cheapest method though, is if he has a neighbor with high speed internet (and a wireless router), pay them a few bucks a month to share it.
