I really hate my internet service by at&t. About every hour my connection falls into hell and . That's how bad my internet is. I struggle to use google sometimes.

I've been looking for a solution for over a year. ANY suggestions?
I'm on a desktop. Not using wireless. Weather is not a factor. No downloads. NADA. I have no knowledge of ISP and that stuff. Please help. Anything would be nice.

Is this ADSL? If so please provide us with line parameters (from your modem)
Something like Line Rate, Attainable Line Rate, Noise Margin, Line Attenuation, Output Power.
What speed are you paying for?

BTW- I removed part of a sentence from your post- you can't bypass word filter no matter how frustrating your connection is.

Looks like you are paying for slow speed cable internet.

My father got the AT&T bundle package to save money (TV, phone, cable internet) and it turns out that the cable internet AT&T offered in the package is as slow as yours. I had to pay extra money to bump up the speed.

I think it's more than that- slow is one thing but the ping is atrocious.

I have no clue what all that is, sorry. I live in CT and the internet package right now is the fastest that is offered where I live. My normal internet speed is about 126 mb/sec but about every hour my internet crawls to a halt for 20 minutes.

Can you briefly explain those things so I can do some research? I don't want to chew up your time. I just need some potential problems and a starting point!

OK. You do have some kind of networking equipment in your apartment (modem or a router), right? What is it- producer and model, please?
Does the cable that provides internet and is connected to this networking device is a plain Ethernet cable or a phone cable?

Your normal speed is 126mbps? Not 126KB/s?
126mbps is very fast- are you sure about that?

You do know that the fastest "home broadband" internet speed in the world is 18.7 Mbps (Mb/s) (megabit/second ) = 2.3375 MB/s (megabytes/second) = 19,148.8 Kb/s (kilobits/second), right? 126 Mb/s doesn't sound right to me. How much are you paying for your internet connection? If you do have 126 Kb/s then it is really slow and I could see why you are lagging.

Those three spots are Berkeley (average speed: 18.7 Mbps), Chapel Hill, North Carolina (average speed: 17.5 Mbps), and Stanford, California (average speed: 17.0 Mbps).
Source: Your fastest Internet in the world is found in Berkeley, CA

I think you are mixing up Kb/s, Mbps (Mb/s), and MB/s.

Edited: Thanks for makaveli72 for correcting me. The articles I posted above are old.

Sorry, if I wasn't clear before. I was talking about the fastest "home broadband" internet connection worldwide; not a OC-768 (40 Gbps) or OC-3072 (160 Gbps) non-resident connection made for corporations. I don't know a single person that I have met who has an Optical Carrier connection.

But, it seems you are right; the data I posted earlier is 9 months old. Looks like average speeds have changed quite a bit in that time period; especially in South Korea.

I assume you're talking about averages or something, because my home service is faster than that:

There's a bunch of other traffic going on (this is a 50mbit/50mbit tunnel so I can have a whole /24 here, and there are a bunch of backups going out which make the upload speed seem slower than usual).

Yes, I was talking about averages in speed. That was the fastest home broadband internet connection average 9 months ago. Currently, South Korea's home broadband internet connection takes that place.

    I like your internet connection.

i don't know what your speed issues are related to, but ATT has 1 year contract prices include their Elite service which is ~6MB down for $24.95 per month. it's only for new customers, but if you call and threaten to cancel unless you get this price, they'll give it to you.

i've had issues in the past that required a tech to come out and play with outdoor lines and such. it was a reoccurring problem for me a year ago but i haven't had any issues since.

SORRY, I THINK I PUT THE WRONG UNITS. It's 126 (whatever the normal unit is). When I download music, movies, or apps on my iPod touch I usually see a download speed of about 126 kbs/sec (or whatever the unit is).

Yes, I have a modem provided by AT&T. There is telephone line connecting to the modem. There is also an ethernet port that connects to a some kind of "brick" that is connected to a power outlet. There's a separate port for the power line so I think that "brick" is some sort of internet transformer thingy. I'm sorry, I'm good with computers but I know squat about networking.

I used to have a problem where every time someone called in/out using my homephone (landline) the internet would grind to a halt and lag. I called AT&T many times and they eventually solved the problem. If that helps any bit.....

I pay about $35-40 per month. With all those promotions, the price changes a lot. It's the LOWEST package offered but the ONLY service where I live. But this lag shouldn't happen.

My modem is called 2Wire. The specific name is 2Wire Gateway according to the sticker on it. Should I post a model number? I don't want to throw that info out here if it's not needed.

    2Wire.com: Home

Ok, I just ran a speed test when my internet is running fine. My download speed is 1.2 Mbps. These are the correct units.

This is exactly what I did, good advice. I don't know if the promotion is still around though. If I remember correctly, I did it in 1st quarter last year, so the price will go up to $35 soon (regular price), which still seems to be good for 6mbps. I've been happy w the service.
