I'm currently using a b router, and I want to upgrade to a g router. Type of connection is wireless. Will my ISP (sbc yahoo dsl) know if I have changed routers to a different brand, will it make it worse? how much of a difference is it between a b and a g router? my dad is paranoid when it comes to computer technology...
btw, I have the AGN wireless card in in my notebook.

These days, you might as well get an N router for the range and speed.
N > G > A/B.
Edit: BTW, welcome to 2007. -
yes, I can get an N router but it's too expensive atm. I guess I can wait until there's a killer discount.
-
They're not that expensive at all. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833127238

hmm, look at those reviews...
anything over $50 is just expensive for a router. that's the impression he gets. -
I wouldn't go for a N just yet because they are still in the draft phase and may last laptop had a Intel N card and was very problematic with a N router, and even a couple of G routers, also my other PC with a G adapter had problems when using the N router even though they are supposed to be back wards compatible.

hey compusa is selling them at a hot price. $3 (AR) for a g router.

Should I get the TRENDNet 54Mbps Wireless Firewall Router, 802.11g, b?
will my ISP find out if I change routers? If they do... what are they going to do? -
your ISP doesnt know what happends in your local network......they only know you are using bandwidth pretty much, the router is something you do
its kind of like the water authority selling you water, and you turning it into ice.....you paid for it and they dont really care, it wont reflect upon the performance of it either
a good store bought router is the simple linksys wrt54g, its a very well documented router so you wont have any trouble finding support -
WRT54G has changed and recommending it is a huge mistake. It's proven to be junk http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/content/view/26843/51/
Only 8MB of RAM, 2MB flash, VxWorks instead of Linux and very unreliable.
If you don't wanna look far just go for WRT54GL. -
proven to be junk? Hardly, just because they introduce something with the word "Linux" and add some extra flash in the later versions doesnt quite make it the better of the two....but many have already argued the fact on the forum, and they are simply store bought routers

if you are really looking for that much more feature in a router, simply put up your own gateway running a flavor of *BSD, its just as cheap if you have an old box laying around......

How many routers with 8MB RAM have you seen?
What can you do if you have problem with VxWorks- throughput, VoIP, P2P or whatever?
I don't intend to discuss that as I'm a bit tired of experts without even slightest knowledge of hardware details of what they recommend.
WRT54G's fame was earned years back with v1-4.
I just issued a warning- if you or anybody else want to ignore it- fine with me.
EDIT:
Changing routers
