I was curious to know if I can change my IP address.

    Should I:
    Unplug router?
Change settings in NETGEAR router logon?
If so, what would I do.

    help!
    Thanks!

it depends on how your ISP assigns IP addresses
usually it's dynamic, so every time you turn off your dsl/cable/modem and turn it back on you have a new IP
but some people buy static IP, with this you have the same IP all the time, even if you restart your modem
the only way to change your IP if you have static IP is to contact your ISP and have them change it

First off, thank you for the reply.

I have tried 10 minutes of the modem/router being off, but i read that you should also try to have it off for a good eight hours.

I will give that a shot, and hopefully, I will not have to contact my ISP to get a new IP

Your router takes the ISP supplied IP address and then the router gives the computers connected to it an IP address, usually 192.168.0(or 1).100 and works up. There should be a setting in your router config menu that allows you to assign IP address by MAC address and/or computer name.

No you cant do that. Set it back as it was before. There are 2 kinds of IP addresses. One for external use which the ISP normaly always assignes and you need to take what you get. And then there is a internal IP address which is normaly asigned by the router to the PC via DHCP and you can change that.

Which do you want to change? Changing the internal one is not problem. You can change it to an ip starting with 192.168.X.X or even 10.X.X.X where the X stand for any number from 1 to 254.

Changing the external IP address is a bit harder. The external IP address is what people see when you go online so if you got banned from somewhere or want to get around the rapidshare ip logging then this is what you need to change. The only way to change it is to try to disconnect and try again and see if you get a new IP. This works aslong as your IP doesnt give static ip addresses. It should change but I cant tell you how long it will take.

You hit the nail on its head! I am I.P. banned from several places and came to the conclusion that changing my external I.P. would be the fix.
The IP I am talking about is the one that is not 192.168.1.1 or any variation of that, but I need to change the other one.

So, basically, I cannot change my IP thru the router settings, but rather I just have to leave my modem/router unplugged for a certain amout of time.

    Thanks.

To change that IP address you'll probably have to give your ISP a call and have them assign you a new one.

Aren't there several IP addresses? Which one do you want to change? I think there is one that follows your computer no matter where you go. And there is one that is based on the cable modem. And then there is one that is the router's IP address usually 192.168.1.100, 102, 103...etc.

Your're correct azntiger1000 you're MAC address follows you where ever you go, helps identify the different nodes that are on a network. So in his case I would use a static IP on the intranet computers. Remember to type ipconfig/all to get the information that you'll need and assign the IP's,subnet, gateway,DHCP,and DNS servers.

    I still do not understand.

My router IP is 192.168.1.1, and I believe that this is everyones number as well.
My laptop is connected to my router using the IP 192.168.1.5
And My PSP is connect to the router at 192.168.1.4

I do not need to change these numbers here^, but, I want to change the IP 69.121.167.181.

    I have http://www.optimum.com/
they are my internet/cable/phone provider. I could not find anything on the site about IP addresses.

    Thanks.

And, as far as I understand, all three of these take the same ip (69.121.167.181.) So i cannot access the website/server that I am banned from.

It all depends on your ISP. Usually I think they will not change it because as long your internet works they won't care why you want to change it. I'm not sure about your ISP but the ISP I am in will not let me change it because the two digits in the front "69" represents a working IP address and if it goes beyond that like in the "48" then it is considered a non-working IP address.

Again you can't change this on your own, your ISP would have to do this. And to have it done you would have to pay for it kinda like leasing a car you own the IP/car for as long as you're willing to pay for it. Usually private buisnesses do this.

    * 69.121.167.181 is the address everyone sees you on the internet coming from.
    * Your router is using Network Address Translation to allow more than one device to use your one public internet address, and to provide some security from internet attacks.
    * All the connected devices on your intranet see 192.168.1.1 as their Internet Gateway Address, which will get them connected to the internet using the 69.121.167.181 address.

Most ISP these days, register the MAC address of the hardware connected to their networks. In doing so they are actually using MAC filtering. So even if you disconnect and power off your modem for 10+min, you may end up with the same IP address. This is one way they are able to track usage.

Changing your internal network is easy, the ISP controls theirs. And there are even a few that have used private IP on their network. Then do the NAT on there end. If you want a constant changing Ip you need to look at Anonymiser software.

If you have done something to get you blacked balled on some sites. You either need to rethink your usage. Or for some, pay the small fee to get unlimited access.
