My roommates and I can get internet when we plug directly into our cable modem through an Ethernet cable but when we hook the modem up to our wireless router, we cannot access the internet through it.

I've tried cloning my pc's mac address to the router or modem or whatever. and a number of other solutions. It used to work for like a few days, then worked intermittently, and then it just stopped.

Im at the end of my rope with this wireless modem, even bought a new wireless router and had the same thing happen. i have a linksys cm100 cable modem and now a belkin surf n300 wireless router.
    any help is appreciated

If the light is on your modem, I'm guessing your signal may be crappy coming in. You need to call your cable company and get them to figure it out. Do you have any cable splitters or anything on your system?

The modem should not be randomly dropping the connection like you're saying it is.

Cable modem are sensitive to signal strength. Normally there is a 4 connector limit. So if you at the end your marginal.

i have it off of a splitter in my room. I tried it direct into the line in my room and with the splitter, and no go. On the splitter and connected directly to my computer or playstation, i can get on the internet with good speeds. Im really at a loss for what the problem is. do you think if i called my cable company they could send someone out to look at it?

Definitely. The only other thing to try is to hook it into the cable outlet as close to the entrance to the house as you can, so you can rule out interference elsewhere in the system. If that's still not working, then call the company and they'll send a guy out. It's their problem, not yours.

The general consensus that I've come to after google-ing a couple of items, is that the CM100 Linksys Cable modem isn't a particularly good modem, and they tend to crap out pretty easily. Also, I've found other posts elsewhere that are or have had, the same problem you're having. Intermittent connection issues. If you want a good cable modem look at the Motorola Surfboards, or the Arris Touchstone VoIP models. Your cable company might give you a different one if they supplied the Linksys one.

i bought the lynksys one cause it was cheap and the new supplied modems and router combos by time warner are all in one modem routers, and you cant log into them and change any of the settings, and i mean any. no changing passwords or encryption types, no messing with port forwarding or anything like that.

yea, i've power cycled everything multiple times in every possible order and still nothing. we are in a weird situation with internet.
namely we live in a house with 11 people

the house is split into two apartments and only one of them buys cable and its provided to the entire house.
for the internet we just purchased a second modem to be used on our side of the house and had the people on the side with subscription call up and register it and pay for a second road runner connection for 45$ a month.

so its not like we arnte paying to use our cable modem or for the service, just if we called a technician it would be a little weird to direct them to our apartment instead of the one that would have called.

Depending on your relationship with your house mates it appears that if you purchased a good quality wireless router and installed at their modum you could encript with a simple password and have constant wireless access.

they have a modem thats and all in one with a wireless router built in. and its severly limited in the alterations that can be made to it. I'm on their internet right now. its just not good for playstation, gaming online, or large file downloads.
