I'm having some fairly extreme problems getting my wireless file server working.

I'm converting it from a top of the line computer, latest i7 processor, SSD's, top notch components.

I have two 300mbps wireless cards on it, one that is a Linksys PCI WRT600N, the other is a ASUS pce n15.

Either way which I configure them, with the linksys receiving internet or the ASUS receiving internet, and the ASUS sending internet or the linksys sending it, I get around 3MB/s file transfer speeds to and from the file server. This is from a lapop that is also maxed out performance wise, using the fastest SSDs. Intel i7 extreme processors, etc. BOTH wireless cards say 300MB/s under wireless settings in their status in both the file server and the laptop client.

I've tried redoing the configurations multiple ways and restarting each computer and reinstalling. No matter what I get 3 MB/s. This is all the more insane considering I'm getting well over 25 MB/s from the internet through the same setup on the laptop.

There are no hardware bottlenecks anywhere, the software is just set up wrong.

On top of all that it seems that it's impossible to enable the Linksys WRT600N to work in AD-HOC or as an access point on 5GHZ.

I'm completely floored by this issue. It should not be happening. Can anyone help with all this?

Have you tried using the laptop from exactly where the desktop's aerials are and seeing what sort of signal you get?

Also with the PCI card, are we talking the WMP600N, and not the WRT600N (which is a router)? There appear to be documented cases of it not working under W7.

Try and checking your speed with your anti-virus turned off? I had a lot of speed problems downloading to my desktop, from my laptop, until I disabled the CA antivirus. The anti-virus wanted to scan every incoming file in the background, even if was in my home network. Once I isolated the problem to this, I was able to correct it in the CA program.

Oh, by the way, I have a Linksys E3200 router, and I use the LAN Speed Test v1.1.7 free version from:

    Downloads

My max connected wireless speed is only 144, because I don't have the 5GHz card in my laptop, and the desktop is connected via a wired 100 Mbps card to the router. So I really don't know how 2 wireless connections would impact the total speed between your machines through your router. Have you checked the speed with both your server, and the laptop wired?

I'm no expert, and I'm just throwing this out because sometimes the overlooked piece, turns out to be the solution.

If you don't use any type of anti-virus software in your file server, "never mind".
