    What machine do you have, and are you trying to connect though a WiFi connection of your Ethernet jack?

    It's usually this - people ask me this all the time - many notebooks in the last two years come with hardware managers that control wifi, bluetooth, cardbus, etc.

    You need to turn the Wi-Fi back ON when battery mode is selected. You should also be able to save the feature so that you don't need to do it next time you are on battery. If it annoys you (like it does for me) wipe out the program. What is your brand?

    No, there is probably an additional power manager program (like Dell's QuickSet or HP's QuickLaunchButtons) that will shut off the NIC when on battery power. You don't need to kill the application IF you can toggle that program to "not shut down the NIC when on battery power."

    I think you are talking about the Power4gear feature. It has various settings such as super performance, high perf, dvd, quiet office, presentation, battery saver, and a few others/

    Got the same problem with an IntelPro3945.

    To solve this, try to change some properties of the network adapter.
    Network Connections->Select your wifi adapter->Properties->Configure...

    There I have a property called 'Power Management' in the given list.
    try to set this property to 'Highest'.
