I have a Lenovo 3000 C200 with Windows XP. I have set up a wireless network via a Netgear wireless router that connects to my cable modem. The laptop connects to the wireless network but will not connect to the internet. I have tried and tried and I just don't know whats wrong. I even spoke to the Netgear Customer Service Rep and he couldn't fix it. Then I tried to call Lenovo but they wanted to charge me. I really want to access the internet from my laptop while I am at home. I have connected to the wireless Internet on campus and in the local library so I'm not sure if I have a setting incorrect on the Netgear router or what. Please help!

Try turning off and turning on the laptop, the router, and the cable modem. That uses does the trick after a couple of tries.

Does it work if you used wired connection between your laptop and router?

Check the TCP/IP settings for your wireless card. For most users, the settings should be set to "obtain ip/dns server address automatically".

I don't know if this applies to the C200, but Lenovo's ThinkAdvantage Access Connections network management software can change those settings for each profile.

Turn off your firewall, then try. Did you add security, is so is it failing auth ????
Look at the results of "ipconfig /all", try to ping 66.94.234.13 and ping yahoo.com. If you can not ping the IP address you do not have a gateway. If you can ping the IP but not the name you do not have a valid DNS's.

I will try both suggestions when I get home and will let you know the outcome.

Check the power plug on your router. My husband once unplugged the router by mistake and all was well until a couple of days later when the battery ran out.

The router is plugged in, I have a desktop PC hooked up to it that I am currently using! I checked to see if the laptop would work while connected to the router and it does not. I pinged the IP address and it stalled, but tried to pin yahoo.com and it came back with the same message. So if its the DNS, how do I fix it? Where do I get a DNS? The one I have now is the same (well similar) to the default gateway. This is so frustrating. Thanks in advance for all of your help!

Check your port properties (tcp/ip advanced) and make sure you are not trying to go through a proxy server. Also make sure it is set up to get this info from the DHCP server. With it failing on both when wired tells me something is a miss. Also check to see if you have any errors on your hardware drivers, if so you will need to reinstall them.

Also under your properties how many things are you loading? You are only needed to have 2-3 min. Sometimes when all of the other junk is loaded it prevents your from connecting. Had the problem with my NB when I first got it.

You could also try uninstalling the adapter and rebooting windows should reinstall it upon reboot to see if that helps.

I checked the port properties and they are not set to go through a proxy server. And it is set up on Default to get info from the DHCP server. How do I check errors on hardware drivers?

I am only loading the basic stuff, I made sure all of the junk was off of the laptop.

Could it be the DNS server? I might have a bad one, how do I get a good one or are they specific to my area or NB? I have no idea about this stuff.

To test your connection see lets see what values you currently have, post the results of "ipconfig /all".

Then see if you can "ping 69.94.234.13" and "ping yahoo.com" from the command prompt. If you can ping the ip you have a valid gateway. If you can not ping yahoo.com you do not have a valid DNS server. If both work you should be able to go on line.

To find out what DNS your ISP uses, this should be is the connection info in the router if it's on line. If not we have found the problem.

I entered the DNS myself when I set up the wireless router, the rep from netgear gave me that DNS #. As for the ping yahoo.com was not able to transmit said it could not find host however, when I pinged 66.94.234.13 It came back with all of these times and numbers and packets. So I would only assume that worked out okay.

Can you ping with manual DNS numbers? The DNS numbers you entered are not correct. Should not be a private IP address.

The DNS number should come from your router, WAN (ISP) settings. But public ones work if the gateway is correct.

It almost acts like your trying to go threw a proxy server.
