Can't see my Wireless

I just did a fresh install of Win XP and now for some reason I can't see my wireless when I do a search. I can see several others around me just not mine.

I'm using Linksys new WRT160n

Did you also re-installed your wireless adapter card driver?

 

Yes yes. I'm not THAT noobish. And i'm pretty sure I have the same driver I had before the fresh install

 

Did you re-start your router? (you might need to reset it also)

 

Yeah i'm about to reset the router now. Be back in a few minutes

I just changed the channel to 11 and I found it, so I guess everything is cool. Trying to connect now.

 

That's so funny, I went for a walk and I was thinking about your problem and I was just going to suggest you change the channel, lol.

Do an ipconfig/release and ipconfig/renew.

 

This is quite annoying
nothing when i tried that

 

Sometimes antivirus/antispamer/antispyware etc. cause that type of problem, try to disable them for a moment to check.

zonelarm is well known as troublemaker.

Otherwise I suggest you do ipconfig/all and post the rsults to see what is not configured properly.

Ok, firs of all, you have an IP address in your wireless adapter out of the allowed range, how did it get there?

Also your submask should be 255.255.255.0.

Go to you Network & Sharing, Status, properties, continue, and go to the IPv4, properties, and make sure you have nothing in the IP addresses and DNS, clear everything. Have DHCP to take care of it.

I just realized that you have XP, and I gave you the Vista instructions, you just need to get where you can affect the IP protocol v4, see the pic here below.

 

Well yeah i realized the subnet mask wasnt the same...

So where do I go first to get there?

Select start, connect to, show all connections, right click on the wireless icon, property, TCP/IP, and then make sure that the IP and DNS addresses are selected automatically.

Yeah, I checked on all of that. IP and DNS addresses are selected automatically and Zero Config starts automatically.

I downloaded an updated version of Intel's PROSet/Wireless driver/software. I'm going to try that, but I can't really test it till I get home from work

edit: Well I installed it and tried connecting to my office's wireless and it connected perfectly, where before I installed it I kept getting limited connectivity. Hopefully it'll be the same thing when I go home.

Spoke too soon it seems

I can see my network now, but I can't connect to it or any other network. I connected fine yesterday at work, and later that night at home. But today when I came home from work (didn't have it at work) I can't connect to my network

 

Run ipconfig /all again and see how your interface is configured right now.

Did you install SP2 or SP3 after you reinstalled XP? What wireless security are you running on your router?

 

You don't seem to get an IP address. And assuming that your router is using DHCP, then it would seem that an anti-whatever is preventing your laptop to talk to the router.

 

Yeah I have SP3 installed. I haven't installed any firewall...should i try disabling the firewall on the router

Connect your laptop to the router's Ethernet port, and report if it works.

i've reset the router, disabled the WEP password, i have the latest driver installed straight from Intel's website. I don't know what's wrong

 

So I come into work and my wireless works just fine with connecting to the office network. I think I may have to just suck it up and call Linksys Tech support

 

Good morning needdcash, I hope you don't have a headache this morning.

If you can work with no problems at work, it means is your router at home, and more precisely the WiFi part.

The only thing I can imagine is that you are entering the WP/WPA password manually and that you forgot the one at home, or that the RF section of your router is defected.

 

Headache isn't too bad so I can function.

Yeah the router in question is the one in my home.

I even tried to connect with the security disabled on the router though

 

So it is the RF circuit that is not functioning well, replace the router says the Doctor network

Although Linksys is supposed to be good and cheap, I personally like Netgear, you need to choose the product that will fit your needs, just go to their web site and study their products, they have a router with extended range and MIMO, I think is their 3500 model.

 

I've always had a problem with Linksys unfortunately. How much does the Netgear with range and MIMO go for?

I just bought this router about a month ago, so I'm going to give it some more time and try figure out what's wrong with it b/c it was working just fine before I reinstalled XP.

I'm going to ask for my friend to bring over his laptop to see if he can connect.

 

Yeah, that's an excellent idea, try the router elsewhere. There just a few things can go wrong with a router, power, drivers and hardware, and it seems that your problem is hardware.

Have you tried to download the latest firmware?

 

Yeah tried that and nothing

It was connected 2 nights before just fine when I first posted the problem. I'm not sure what I did, but the next day (without me changing anything) it just stopped

 

That sound very much like a hardware issue, especially that your wireless card doesn't see the AP at home at all, but it can see your work place.

- no issues with fw
- no issues with anti-xxx applications
- no issues with router firmware
- no issues with TCP/IP protocol setup
- no issue with network settings

To me it sounds like a hardware issue indeed.

So you see it on the network map, what does it says when you try to connect?

It says that its waiting for network then it just stops. like it times out.

 

That you see the network it just means your wireless card in the laptop sees it, but since WiFi protocol can't create the link with the router, it means your router is defected, the RF section.

 

If you're running the router naked and it's still not connecting it could be loused up firmware. Did you upgrade the firmware recently? If not, did you have any sort of power outages or power surges in the electrical system of your building recently?
