I got an old Acer 3003 WLMI running Windows XP that I keep as a spare. There was a few things that would pop up on the screen that I couldn't get rid of so I did use the Acer eRecovery feature to clean up the whole C drive. Now, even though I'm connected to the wireless system at the library, I can't go to the Internet. My only way to try to go there is to click on the Internet Explorer icon on the desktop. When I do so, in the browser bar appears the address: https://www.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/home and...all I get is that the page cannot be displayed. Trying over and over, I found out that the only website I can go to is bing.com I found that by typing Yahoo in the browser bar and it sent me to a search at bing.com for Yahoo. You then click on yahoo.com and...you get "the page cannot be displayed". Any ideas?

So does this happen when you at the library or your home wifi network? You don't seem to clarify this part? Most places requires you accept their internet policy usage before you can use their wifi and if your system can't get that then you have no wifi internet there. Just like at home if your laptop can connect to the wifi router then you get no internet. The "page cannot be displayed" means your not connected to the internet that is what it is telling you. And if you can't get www.yahoo.com to show up with all the page then you have no wifi connections. So you need something else to verify if you have internet connections or not.

I now found out that I could type Mozilla and and actually reach it so...I did download Firefox and...BINGO..I'm back in business. Seems the crappy IE is the problem ?

I'm using the library WIFI network.

Now, I'm totally screwed up. I did download a few things like Google Chrome and then AVG free. This did slowdown the laptop to a turtle pace. The laptop when new came with Norton antivirus so I thought it might fight with AVG and wind up slowing the whole thing. At "all programs", there no is Norton antivirus (but there's in an icon for it on the desktop). At "add and remove programs", Norton antivirus isn't there. So, I decided to first get rid of AVG and see what it would change. It was impossible to uninstall the damn AVG Zen thing. So, I decided that I will again use Acer eRecovery to get rid of it. Even using eRecovery, all was at a turtle pace and at one point, it did stop working. So, to get out of there I did click on the "X" in the top right and now I'm screwed. The laptop gets on and the window says:" Starting Windows 98 This driver is provided by Oak technologies inc" and then it's stuck on a screen where there is the word "recovery" that is written in big letter in the lower right corner and...nothing happen. Any ideas?

I just seen (very pale) that in the upper left is written "Invalid media type drive D. Abort ,Retry, Fail ?"

I can go to the BIOS F2 but not to safe mode F8...it seems.

Could I try to boot it from a Linux booting CD and then restart the Acer E-recovery ?
    ----------------------------

It doesn't boot from a UBUNTU live CD

Now, I did remove the hard-drive and I was able to get the Ubuntu Live CD to start and run for some time but it couldn't boot. I got this screen (see pictures) but it's like Chinese to me. Also, after many attempts at removing/replacing the hard-drive, I did get a new message at the page just before the one that stucks. It says to press "ESC" but it didn't do any better. Last picture (recovery) is of the page that stucks.

The other thread you started seems better placed to handle this problem.
I'm gonna close this one, continue the discussion in the other thread.
