I'm new here, and I've read through a lot of the threads, but I can't seem to find an answer to my problem. I hope it's ok to ask the following question....

I bought an Acer Ferarri 3200 notebook a few months ago. I recently decided that I would like to be able to use the internet through a wireless connection. I went out on boxing day and bought a D-Link wireless router. I was then told I would need a PC Card to communicate with the router (although reading through this forum today has made me doubt that I need this at all....) so I went and purchased the PC card that is compatiable with the D-link wireless router. I hooked it all up with an ethernet cable from my cable internet to the router and the card in the slot at the side of my notebook. It shows that there is a connection, but I can't get onto the internet. When I put the second ethernet cable from the router my notebook, it hooks up to the internet fine. I'm assuming the problem is something to do with the settings on my computer. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

You don't need the card, you already have wireless integrated into your unit. You might try reading teh setup instructions that came with the router, it sounds like you skipped over that entire process.

I've actually tried doing the set up two different times, because I thought that I might be missing something after I tried it the first time. The instructions that they give with the router tell you to put an ethernet cable from the cable modem to the router and then another ethernet cable from the router to computer 1. Obviously, I don't want to use the second ethernet cable, and I was told to just skip over that part. But, then again, that was from the same person who told me I'd need a PC card, so I guess I shouldn't have listened to him!

Apologies for jumping in but sounds like you have similar problems to me.. although I think I got a bit further!

I have managed to connect to my router and access the net through it but... the connection will often drop and go completely.

It will only connect to the internet if the ip address assigned to the laptop is within the range 192.168.0.2 --> 192.168.0.55 (fair enough, as it says this in the manua) but then why does it not auto assign it a ip in this range instead of something strange like 198.xx.....etc.. I keep having to click repair untill something like 192.168.0.4 comes up.. but even then the connection won't last that long.. even though the connection appears strong (good k/b rates, strong signal)

I am finding the router seems to 'reset'? itself sometimes aswell. (Often I will turn on one of the PCs that is wired to the router and it will not have problems connecting to the LAN and internet automatically as it is supposed to)

Can anyone help? Am I missing a crucial step?

I am using a burecom broadband wirelss modem which I have plugged straight into the internet port of this NEC modem my ISP have given us which also provides broadband TV.
