I'm having this issue both at home and at university accommodation. Namely, I can play my 360 and PS3 games online but nothing on my laptop. I've tried both with the wireless router and by directly plugging the ethernet cable into my PC but no luck either way.
I'm using Windows 7 64 bit and F-Secure anti Virus 2010. Any help would be greatly appreciated (I've no idea what I'm doing so feel free to explain things in a slow voice using simple words all the while assuming that I'm an idiot _ may know a thing or two about hardware but this stuff completely eludes me).
EDIT: I can't even get a server list from steam, let alone join a game.

Can you think of any change you recently made to the computer before this issue arised?
Maybe doing a System Restore might correct the problem. (Go to the Start menu and type System Restore and launch the app. Try restoring to a date when all was well.)
Maybe F-Secure or some other Firewall type service is blocking the connection....
BTW, what type of online gaming are you trying to run on the laptop? -
I changed a setting in F-secure to have my wireless router listed as a trusted network adapter and suddenly I can go online. Been playing the transformers game all day now (or rather trying to - the servers are way too underpopulated considering how great this game is). Matchmaking is taking forever though - no idea if that's just the game or a problem on my end.
I did mess around with some settings while on holiday as I was trying to get my grandmother's broadband to work properly but to no luck. Originally thought I'd messed something up there.
Would system restore just change these sorts of settings but leave all my data (documents, game saves) intact? -
No, System Restore will restore the computer exactly how it was on any given date that you choose to restore to; therefore if you for example made a game save today and then did a SRestore to yesterday you will lose that game save. Similarly if you created a Word doc today and restored to yesterday, after the restore has completed and you log back in, that file will not be there.
But from the sounds of it, you seem to be back in business.
Can't get online
