The notebook trying to access the printer that is hooked up to the other computer is able to find the printer when I select "Connect to this printer". (It does not locate the printer when I select "Browse for a printer). After finding the printer I receive the message that it will dowload drivers. Then it sayss:

"The server does not have the correct print driver installed"

I Googled this problem, and a someone had this exact problem and posted it in a forum. Someone responded with a solution, but neither the original poster nor I understand what to do to solve the problem. Maybe someone else can figure out what is being said.

The printer is hooked up to a computer with Windows Vista.

The other computer on the network has XP.

I went to the website for my printer and attemtped to download different XP drivers on both computers (except the full solution , but nothing worked.)

When I attempted to install the plug and play driver, the installation says it can not find the printer. (This problem might be related to the notebook not being able to find the printerwhen I selected "Browse for a printer" earlier.)

First - do all computers belong to the same workgroup?
Second - have you created identical users and passwords on all of the computers?
Third - on the XP computer, have you disabled simple file sharing?
Fourth - on the Vista computer, did you select private network (which enables file and print sharing)?
Fifth - did you verify that the printer is shared?

What printer are you trying to share (make and model, please)?

First- I don't know what a workgroup is.

Second- where do I create these users and passwords?

Third > How do I do this? Why do I have to do this? What does that have to do with it being able to acces the printer on the other computer.

    Fourth > Yes

    Fifth > Yes

I'm guessing that since you don't know what a workgroup is, that will explain why you can't share your printer.

    A brief explanation: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Workgroup_(Computer_networking)
A Microsoft guide on how to network printers from XP and Vista: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb727037.aspx

    Creating users in XP: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb727037.aspx
    Creating users in Vista: http://www.tutorialized.com/view/tutorial/How-to-Add-Users-in-Windows-Vista/26202

Disabling simple file sharing gives you more control on permissions and how files/folders/printers are shared in your workgroup. How to disable simple file sharing: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307874

Spend some time reading up on how file and printer sharing works, especially between Vista and XP.
