I upgraded my laptop to windows 8.1 from windows 8 and after a while I was unable to connect to the internet but able to connect to my printers wifi. I thought that 8.1 was the problem so I went back to just windows 8, but I still have the problem. I can connect to my wifi when I am within a couple of feet from the router and no matter where I am in the house I get full bars I just can't connect. Sometimes after I just turn my laptop on I am able to get on the internet for a couple seconds but than I am unable to, however no matter where I am in the house I am able to connect to my printer and print. Any suggestions on how to fix the problem? Thanks.

You supplied no info about notebook, router, wireless card, router setting etc.

Did you clean install Windows 8.1.1 or upgrade from 8.0?

    Clean installs are always better.

During a clean install of 8.1 or 8.1.1 with WiFi turned on Windows will install a driver for most wireless cards that should get yo up and running.

Download a Windows 8.1.1 ISO that's original untouched from MSDN and unpack it onto a USB flash drive using the Microsoft USB/DVD Tool

Send my a PM if you need location where to get ISO

If you have a setting to enable or disable WMM on your router, make sure it's enabled.

Otherwise provide more detail about your setup.

I have a lenovo ideapad u410, the wireless card is an intel N 2230, the router is from Comcast and is a Arris tg862.
I upgraded form windows 8.0 to 8.1 but after the internet stopped working, at this time I didn't realize that if I was close to the router it would work, so I went back to windows 8.0 after hearing that 8.1 has been causing connectivity issues. However the issue is still present, I am able to connect to my printer, which is near my router, from anywhere in the house.

When I enter ipconfig/renew under cmd prompt I get "no operation can be performed while it has its media is disconnected". I'm assuming that this is the issue how would I go about fixing this?

Wipe the drive and do a clean install of Windows 8.1.1

I have no connection issues with Windows 8.1 in fact my connection is better than it was on Windows 7

Have your WiFi enabled on the notebook during the installation and a driver will be installed by the OS for your wireless card.

Reset the router to it's factory default settings. After you're connected then tweak then router settings if needed.

BTW,you can install the FREE version of inSSIDer on your notebook and walk around your location with notebook in hand to find dead spots and the best areas for good connectivity. You need only to watch the signal strength as you move around.

    inSSIDer 3.1.2.1 Download - TechSpot

Make sure your router is set to WPA2 AES.If you use WPA(TPIK) or WEP you can't get N speeds. You will be limited to 54Mbps or less.
