I am new to setting up a wireless. When i enable wireless without security, i can connect just fine, but when i enable the wireless and use WEP it just gets stuck in the "waiting for network" for a bit and just gives up. I even copy and pasted the "key" from the router admin menu...

Using D-Link's DSL-G604T by the way.

First don't use WEP, you want to use WPA.
Delete any connection you have added in your Network Connections (MS Zero Config).

Use a wired connection with the NB to do the setup.

Connect to the router. get to the wireless setup section.
    Change the SSID.
Select WPA Security TKIP or PSK
Enter a RANDOM generated key. I like www.grc.com Key generator.
Copy a key to a note pad doc.
Now Paste the key into the wrouter WPA security key field.
NOTE: SOME ROUTERS HAVE A MAX LENGTH < 64 CHRs. So just any length >20 chr and you will be fine.

    Save your settings
For now keep the SSID broadcasting. NOT Stealth or hidden.

Now with your laptop try to connect to the router,
    select your ssid.
Paste the key in when prompted. A good key is almost impossiable to get it error free typing it in. I alwas recommend copy and paste.
Save your settings you should now be connected.

If good, you can now make the ssid broadcast Hidden.

You can Save you NotePad key for later use.

If it does not connect or drops. Disable your firewall for now and retest. If it connect you will need to add a fw rule to allow your subnet.

That router does not support WPA so you must use WEP and MAC Filtering. Unless there was a fw upgrade that added wpa.

The MAC address you enter is the MAC address of your wireless card and I would enter the wired too.

All of this is on page 22 of the manual. http://www.dlink.com/products/support.asp?pid=372#manual

Oddly that I have the same problem with "some" notebook.
I helped my friends hook up the new netgear wireless router WPN824 v2, and it took a while.
After finishing the installation, I tried using my laptop to connect to my SSID with WEP enable and got into no problem, and the other two Gateway laptops can connect, too, just fine.
Thing started to get odd as one of my friend who uses Compaq nx7000 cannot connect to it. It just said "please wait" and promt the key, and after a while, nothing happened.
My other friend uses Dell Inspiron E1505 with Intel P/W 3945 (same as mine). As I entered the key, it reported error in the key string, that what I found weird.

    Any things I missed?

Well, I used WEP at the first place, and some laptop could connect to the router, and some could not.
Now I have changed the security to WPA-PSK [TKIP], and thing seemed to brighten up. All the laptops can connect to the router but one. I downloaded and installed the WPA hotfix but it did not solve the problem; still let me wait for a while and return to the netword selection screen.
