I purchased a new HP Laptop dv9700t recently.

    Configuration is below:

    - HP Pavilion dv9700t Entertainment CTO NB
    - Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium (32-bit)
    - Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Duo Processor T9300 (2.50 GHz, 6 MB L2 Cache, 800MHz FSB)
    - 17.0" WSXGA+ High-Definition HP BrightView Widescreen Display (1680 x 1050)
    - 3GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    - 50% OFF 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GS!!
    - FREE Upgrade to HP Imprint (Radiance) + Fingerprint Reader + Webcam + Microphone
    - Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 4965AGN Network Connection and Bluetooth(TM)
    - 240GB 7200RPM SATA Dual Hard Drive (120GB x 2)
    - LightScribe SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-RW with Double Layer Support
    - No TV Tuner w/remote control
    - High Capacity 8 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
    - System Recovery DVD with Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium (32-bit)
    - Microsoft(R) Works 9.0

I was able to connect to both my home and office wireless conections with no difficulty. I went to my favorite coffee shop and couldn't connect. There was someone else there with a laptop and he was able to connect. No passcode is required and the signal is full bars. Two weeks ago (before I had this computer) I had another new HP dv6700tse laptop (that I returned) and I was able to connect easily at this same coffee shop many times.

Anyone have any idea why I can't connect with this new machine (which should have similiar components) and what can I do to remedy the problem?

Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

    Many thanks,

    Canyon

does it say "connecting" or "connection timed out" or something? IE:where does the process quit while you are trying to connect?

I should have written down the message. It was something about not receiving response and access point. I will go back and copy down the error message. I also tried carrying my laptop to another part of the room with no effect.

It might be a power saving mode. You may go to Control Panel >> power options then click at "change plan setting" on the active plan.

Then click "change advanced power setting"
    Find wireless adapter setting:
change the option to "Maximum Performance"

    Try to connect again.

Vista default setting mostly is maximum power saving which sometimes doesn't enough for connecting a weak/too far hotspot.

I have a very simular problem, mine says that it is connected to the internet (under Network and Sharing Centre) but it will not let me open any websites. It will work find with my open wireless at home (I live in the middle of nowhere, my only nieghbors are 2 miles away and are Amish so I dont really worry about anyone stealing bandwidth). Once in a while it will connect but more often than not it says connected but isnt. I have tried removing the firewall, both Windows and Mcafee, changed networks settings such as the Tcpip (Including removing and reseting them via the command prompt), turned the radio on and off, disabled and enabled the connection, and many other things that I have found on the internet. All to no avail. Last weekend I went with my wife on a mini vacation, three open wifi points were availible at the hotel, no joy, I tried 6 different coffee shops (anniversery weekend, needed lots of coffe :D ) and two diners the only one that worked was Pantera's Breads. ARG!!!!

    Any idea?

Woops, forgot to say: This is a Toshiba U305 with an Intel Wireless integrated b/g/n Latest drivers installed

I went to the same coffee shop again tonight. My laptop connected with no problem. There must of been some problem with their router. At the time of my initial problem there was someone else there who was connected to the internet. Go figure...
