How old is your computer? Is this a new problem, or has it always been a problem? Do you have any type of security applications running?

Check your settings: Under system properties (right click on My computer, select properties, click change settings under computer name, domain..., click Change next to "to rename this computer...workgroup", make sure the workgroup box is selected, and then change the workgroup name.

You can also google for "workgroup name grayed out", and you'll find quite a few possible solutions to try.

this xps 1730 is less than 1year old.. i got this august last year ... i dont have any security running.. using windows firewall and nod32 :) i checked the settings.. everything seems ok.. its just that the workgroup is greyed out when i click the change in the workgroup name in system properties...also when i turned file sharing on.. it only shows "Custom".. i know its supposed to be "On" when its on. .but mine is "custom"

tried searching in google about this one..but cant seem to find the right solution...

my other laptop is hp and uses vista premium as well.. but can access the workgroup computers without a problem... its only my xps 1730 that is having problems...the desktop pc can even access the shared folder on my xps 1730 but my xps 1730 cant access the folders on my desktop pc.. :(

Make sure the workstation service is turned on. Go to run and type in "services.msc".

FYI - that was also explained in the first link of the google search I volunteered.
