yes, but the 3com is a modem/router and is a) discontinued b) overkill

Any router where you can change the lan ip and disable dhcp can be an access point

I mean overkill because you do not need an adsl modem/router.

According to the manuals, both routers allow you to change the lan address so they should both work.

First program the new router to disable dhcp and give it an address out of the dhcp range of the existing router. Then run a cable from your existing router to a SWITCH port on either of the new routers (NOT THE WAN port)

    Instant access point

so i bought the linksys WRT54g2 and it appeared to be a low quality product , as i kept dropping connection every 30 min or so , and i would not work again unless i do a hard reset , yes i did a firmware update ,yes i tried factory defaults , so know i am stuck with 2 different routers that i want to know if they can work as an access point cause they are at my price rage and available at my country ,
    1-DLINK DSL-2640U

Again both solutions- D-Link and Netgear are modem/routers, why?
Do you need a DSL modem/router/AP or just a router that will work as an AP?
    BTW stay away from D-Link

I cannot find manuals for those exact models. I can find the DSL-2640B and the DG834G, which are similar, but may not be exact.

If they are the same, both modem/routers can be used as access points

By default, the dlink uses 192.168.1.1; the netgear uses 192.168.0.1

I recently had a problem with a netgear not wanting to change from its default network, but I assume it was an isolated case.

Again, connect, disable DHCP, change the LAN address to something out of your routers DHCP range (scope). Should work.

because access points here cost triple the price of a decent router :D

I can understand that but you chose ADSL modem/router combo which is more expensive than router by itself.
If you don't need an ADSL modem look for routers-only.

this is the cheapest option i found here :S , i know i getting more than i need , i was really satisfied by the link sys i got yesterday but i appears that the new line of cheap link sys routers are very low quality , i remember the old link sys blue one which every one was using and modding it without any problems

His point is that a standard router might be cheaper still.

    You are listing modem/routers.

It may be a problem with were you live. In the US, the modem is usually supplied by the ISP so there you typically purchase a basic router that plugs into the modem

I think that is not the case where you are.

yeah i understand him now , in Egypt they don't supply modem u just buy a router/modem like my 3com 3CRWDR101A-75 ,and if they supply they supply something like the 3com modem/router , so this kind he is talking about is not really available here alot , and when its available its expensive because its pre-ordered , thanks for ur help guys
