    I have a D-Link DIR-655.

We had a company use an electromagnetic device in our power sockets that prevents termites. All of my electronic devices were unplugged. However, the device was used neam my computer equipment. The power supply on my computer was fried and needed to be replaced. I am not sure if this occurred during the use of the electromagnetic device or when the router was plugged in.

My router does seem a tad slower now. Could this device ruin a router? Someone at the computer shop who really seemed to know what he was talking about said no. If it damaged the router, it would not work. There would be no slower connection. Either it would work or not.

I would like opinions from people on this board. What about the effect on a modem?

I know the easy answer is, yes it can. I would only like answers from people who know for certain.

the guy from the shop is right. it either works or it doesn't. Playing around with blocks of iron and magnetic wire has taught me this.

i am just curious as to what you think an electromagnetic field could do to a router?

maybe try stick it up near the high voltage lines..............that could possibly do something............

Yes it can certainly damage sensitive electronics (CMOS chipsets, RAM's, etc). All depends how strong is the EH field. The variable magnetic field for instance can induce a variable voltage in an antenna, the very antenna in any transceiver like the WiFi minicard. Then it can also induce a variable voltage in other components. However you need to know that most router's design are made with that in mind, so you have a lot of shield material inside the router to protect against it. But everything has a limit, so if you get lightning inducing a very fast current pike in your AC outlet, it will certainly fry your router and computer as well, unless you have a GOOD surge protector.

Now back to your router, if it's working now I would be inclined to say that it has not be affected by your device. Have you done some changes lately? for example, have you upgraded to SP3 your XP OS? Some are saying that it has gotten their computers slower. Also spywares tend to slow down your computer as they are constantly learning your habits and reporting them to their sites. Do you have some exatr applicatins running for nothing? use the TM to disable them.

The reduction in speed happened right after the electromagnetic service was done. That is the only thing that has changed.

Then it could be that, call your ISP and ask them to change it, just tell them that it is not working properly.

Reset the router back to factory and re-install the latest firmware. If the field was strong enough it could have changed some config bits. Rare but it can happen.

If this doesn't help, just call your ISP and ask them to replace it.

As wirelessman so authoritatively set forth, a sufficiently strong EM signal could do damage to your router. It's possible that the router took enough of a hit that it corrupted some of the data/code in the router's nonvolatile memory (if the router has updateable firmware, then that code is most likely stored in flash memory, which is susceptible to corruption by electric surges and the like).

The suggestions that you reset the router to factory default, and then re-flash the firmware are both good - in fact, I would suggest re-flashing the firmware even if there's no newer version than the version you've been using, just as a preventive measure to correct any possible corruption that might have been caused).

maybe it damaged your brain enough to come here with suspicion ???

Electromagnetic waves do damage brain. the reason your ear heats up when u talk on the phone too long.

What phone have you been using?! If my phone had such a high transmit power, I would chuck it as far away as possible.

The heat is from the phone's circuits and the insulating effect of having a phone cupped over your ear, not the radiation.

As for the dizziness - I get a headache everytime I enter a Verizon Wireless store. It's definitely dehydration, combined with the crappy music (in both style and fidelity), and lack of fresh air/plastic vapors.

If you think cellphone radiation is so harmful, you shouldn't be using one
