    I recently posted here . . .
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=31428
. . . about setting up wireless at home for the first time using WRT54GS & WUSB54G (wireless USB network adapter). So after several sessions with customer support and dealing with the "no hardware displayed in the Device Manager" issue, my router is, I believe correctly configured. I believe that my wireless USB adapter is loaded up as well.
The problem: My wireless USB adapter sees my router (as well as all the other wireless routers nearby), but refuses to connect. The only router my adapter will connect with is the one in the neighborhood which is not locked.
    What am I doing wrong?
And if this is addressed elsewhere, sorry for the extra post.

Does it work if you use an RJ45 cable instead of wireless?

Also, do you have a WEP?WPA security key for the router?

Yes to both. My security is WEP 128-bit.
    Thanks,

Try disabling the security and see if it will connect. You can do so by typing your ip address into were you would type a websites address and it will access the router and you will be able to disable the security. Try updating the Firmware for the router to by going to the linksys site and going to support then downloads.
