    Can I do better than DIR-615?

    You definitely can, but it's hard to answer this question as D-Link in it's usual fashion put several different routers in the same box and called them all DIR-615. You can check it by verifying revision- there are units based on Ubicom, Atheros, Ralink and Realtek- all completely different yet all called DIR-615.
    Quite a few of these revisions are supported by DD-WRT and OpenWRT in case you need an alternative to D-Link's own firmware.
    I would test it with new connection, then give an alternative distro a chance and only then buy a new one if needed.
