Just got my E1505 about an hour ago. I will be buying a router shortly (the laptop has the Dell Wireless 1500 Draft 802.11n card), but in the mean time, I thought I would be able to plug the wire that goes from my cable modem to my pc directly into the back of my laptop- thus getting internet access from my cable modem.

I see that the laptop has a Bradcom 440x 10/100 Integrated controller. However, when I plug the cable from the modem into the laptop I am told that "a network cable is unplugged".

Shouldn't I be able to do this, or am I missing something? By the by, I can pull the cable out from the back of the laptop and put it in my desktop pc and it works, so it is not a cable issue.

    Thanks!

    sounds like you're on battery

you have to enable the NIC when on battery via Quickset; by default, the NIC turns off on batt to save power.

moving to networking, just in case

You may also need to do an ipconfig /release from the desktop to release the ip address.

usually by default, the NIC is disabled. control panel/network connections. right click, enable. GL

Thanks all for your help. Turns out I needed to unplug my cable modem for about 10 minutes so it would release itself from my desktop PC (I don't know how turining it off was different than what Pharoke said to do), but it worked fine.

    Thank you again.

Cable modems learn MAC addresses and only allow that MAC to access the cable network, by unpluging it you where making the modem unlearn the MAC for your desktop, allowing it to pick up the address from your laptop.
