I need to buy a 50 foot ethernet cable, I see them online for around $10 made by generic manufacturers. I then see them "certified w/ gold plated connectors" at BestBuy for $39.99. If I am using the cable for connecting my laptop to my router, does it matter? I am using Broadband "cable" ethernet and my card is a 10/100 card. Do I need a "premium/certified" ethernet cable or will it not matter at all because I am not using it at insanely high speeds? Does Cat-5 vs. Cat-6 matter? Again I am only using it to connect my laptop to my router that is connected to my cable modem. Does a "certified" cable make a difference with my setup??

just buy the cheapest one you can find. the only thing i would pay a little extra for is that little cover that goes over the plastic tongue clip that locks the cable into the jack. otherwise, those things break off all the time. other than that, don't believe the hype, just buy a cheap one.

    Thanks for the advice!

I found a Belkin Cat5e 50ft Ethernet cable for $10.50 including shipping at NewEgg. The same exact one goes for $27.99 at my local OfficeMax. Glad I saved the money.

you want a cable story? My parents got a new HD LCD TV (I love it) and they needed a high res cable to hook up to their cable box. They baught some cables from best buy for about $100 only to come home to find out that it was a slightly diffrent type of cable on both pieces of hardware, and best buy did not have the right cable. That ment that they would have to buy another adapter for $80. I went online and got them the cable, with the adapter built in. for 15 bucks, no tax, shipping included. I have since lost my faith in best buy.
