    Hey Guys,
I have a 2 month old toshiba labtop using vista. I have been downloading some movies lately but im not sure if that has anything to do with it. I'm using a college ethernet connection. We also have a wireless so i tried that too. It has been working fine no problems for the past two months. Then the following

    -DHCP stops working
-Connection saids im connecting to identifying, instead of the actual network name
-once it does connect it saids local only and its connected to four networks all local
    -Network 2
    -network 4
    -network 5
    -network 6
    - I looked at these statuses and details, and there is like 5-10 ip adresses for each. So i feel like other people are connected to my cpu or something.
    -ipconfig opens and closes
    -host processes stop working
-I flip on wireless switch. connect to network, it saids connected but its only local.

    What I've done
-Did the 4 NETSH reset commands
-Uninstalled internet hardware ethernet and wireless
    -run two virus protection scans
-reset cpu, shutdown, took ethernet in and out like 10 times

    A. Can my university stop me from acessing the internet bc i have downloaded like 50 movies
    B. Is it a virus
    C. I really need the internet what should i do?
    Thanks for your time

First thing I would do....before beating my head into the floor trying to fix my computer is ask the people who are in charge of Drom maintenance if anything changed regarding the wireless access.

    A) Most definitely. What happens when you open up a web browser? Will it send you to an internal page or something explaining that you've been cut off? That's what I've seen many times.
    B) Doubtful. Viruses don't want to disconnect you, they want you part of the botnet
    C) Call your campus IT group. You pay a tech fee... that's what they're there for.

First off I have some serious work on my cpu that i cant afford to loose. And I really havent done that much to my cpu. So I would really appreciate if you wouldn't treat me like I am so kind of idiot.
Obviously they did not change anything in my dorm its a campus wide internet. No one has this problem except me.
When i open the internet it just gives me the whole you are not connected to the internet. White page, gray writing. Same ol page when your not connected.
And lastly Again im not using wireless, I'm using an ethernet cord. I just said i tried the wireless because the ethernet wasnt working.
I'm a CS major I know how cpu's work it all just doesnt make sense. It happened in a matter of seconds. I downloaded something called PLdivx and then immediately uninstalled it, and then everthing went wrong. And also a new user account has been created on my cpu. I dont know where it came from.

Being a jerk is a good way to not get help. I'll overlook that for now. I actually have my degree in Math/CS, as well as a minor in engineering, and over 10 years industry experience. We can all throw qualifications around... I've still forgotten to plug my computer in and wondered why it didn't work for a few minutes.

We're not treating you like an idiot. Don't forget... you have a grand total of two posts as of now. We have no way to tell how much you know or you don't know, or whether you found instructions on the Internet or anything that prompted your first post. You didn't say anything about PLdivx in your first post. That's a VERY big clue... it didn't just stop, it stopped right after you made a possibly serious change to your machine. And yes, installing software is serious. You give a program unlimited access by allowing the UAC prompt. If you have UAC turned off, turn it back on. I'm not seeing anything good about PLdivx on Google, so that is quite possibly your problem. Look into what apps are starting automatically, and see if PLdivx left some trash on your machine.

FYI, "Uninstalling" on Windows means letting the program take care of things itself. If it doesn't do it nicely, it can cause problems.

hate to say it man and i dont mean anything at all by it but i do agree with pita. i own a computer repair business and fix issues all day and i also dont want to sound like a jerk here but it sounds like the problem was caused more than just happened. we can try to help you the best we can but it does sound like a issue on your system.
there could be a number of things imo causing this. have you tried as pita said to make sure all traces of the divx thing are removed? try a good registry cleaner if you do not know how to manually play with the registry.
imo still sounds like possibly a virus and i understand you ran scanners. what scanners did you run? do you use real time protection?

these are just starting questions. and im sure no one here means anything against you but you would be suprised at how many people even that have a degree in whatever have forgot or made stupid mistakes i know i have and pita said the same.

actually i just googled pldivx and i have now seen that it is in fact malware in some case disguised as a real exe. you may very well be infected.

i would suggest starting with a program called smitfraudfix http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/smitfraudfix.php

run that and see if it comes up clean to start with, then i would suggest a scan with dr web cure it it is a stand alone scanner and does not need installation. just to cover bases.

Try heading down to a campus computer lab and downloading the software to a USB stick or burning it to a CD. That may be your best way going forward.
