Hi all. I'm having problems connecting to the internet using a wired connection. It connected fine yesterday but now it won't. I have checked my IP and DNS etc and they are all entered correctly. Tried to diagnose the problem and got a message saying there was a problem with DNS but the settings are entered correctly. Now when I diagnose it I get a message saying the windows didn't find a problem with the connection, but still I get no internet. Very frustrating.

Anyone know how I could resolve this issue?

Edit:I'm running Vista Home Premium by the way

Its not a problem with the provider. Works fine on my XP laptop but just stopped working with my Vista laptop for some reason.

Do you have wireless on the Vista laptop? Does it work?

Have you done a flushdns command yet? In Vista, right click on the command prompt Start menu entry, run as administrator, and then type this:

    ipconfig /flushdns

Tried that, still no internet, Local Access only. Ran diagnose and got message saying "There may be a problem with your Domain Name Server (DNS) configuration". Works fine on XP laptop though

Are you using DHCP auto config, or are you manually entering the DNS numbers?

see if you can ping yahoo.com and ping 68.180.206.184

If both work everything is set correctly, if yahoo.com does not it's your DNS server numbers.

From the cmd line enter "ipconfig /all" and look at the dns server numbers. These should be other than the gateway. A work around is to enter the number manually in the setup. But these can change as they rotate servers for maintance. Or use one of the public DNS servers as work around.

If this is Vista you need to put the port in a Public group or something, sorry not a vista user.

Contact your ISP and see if there is a problem on their end. Make sure either your router or all of your computer MAC addresses are on file and allowed to use the internet.

I have tried both DHCP auto config and manually entering the DNS numbers.

Tried to ping Yahoo.com but didn't work, successfully pinged 68.180.206.184

Ran ipconfig/all on my XP laptop (same internet connection works fine on this) and entered ip, DNS settings from this onto my vista laptop but still no luck.

Any other suggestions please, starting to think its Vista yet again trying to break my spirit

You manually entered the same DNS that's on the XP machine on the .Vista machine; leaving the other IP settings on the .Vista machine alone and it doesn't work?

I suspect DNS to be at fault here.

Edit: BTW, what does the IP settings for the .Vista machine look like. Do a Start--> Run and type cmd and hit enter. Then type ipconfig /all and post the IP settings here.

Vista has a private/public setting I suspect is the problem, even though it is got using the DNS servers. Some one running vista maybe able to help.

Are you using any MAC filtering to control access?

Oh ok...I know the Private/Public thing you're talking about...there is a setting that allows you to choose whether the network is a Home/Work/Institution network; when you choose this option I think the OS sets it as either Private/Public according to what you choose here. But like you, I don't use .Vista on a regular basis so I can't be sure of what i'm talking about.

Edit: Nevertheless it should be set to Private and this can be changed by clicking the Customize link in Network and Sharing Centre.

Tried the Public/ Private thing, still no joy, I'm about ready to throw this thing out the window now, its just one thing after another, lost count of the amount of times I've had to do a system restore :(

Finally got it sorted. Restored system to about 5 days ago before a Comodo Driver update was installed. Don't know of that was the problem but I don't really care either, internet access at last.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys :)

This worked for me!! I love you! But not in a light in the loafers way :D

I was having the same "local access only" issue, I thought I messed my router up because it started happening at the same time that I flashed my WRT54GL with DD-WRT and Tomato firmware. All is good now... you kick ALL a**!!
