I'm about to buy a new laptop (probably Vostro 1500) and I'll also be getting a broadband wireless service for a few months. I’ll be using it for e-mail and work. Here are my broadband questions.

    1) Can I buy used USB Broadband Wireless modems to use with the service? I need USB to keep the express card port available for a smart card reader. (Not mandatory but nice to have) I can use an express card modem if needed.

    2) I don't want a contract... I know I'll pay more / month, I saw Cingular (At&T offers this).

    3) Any advise on a reliable service in the North Lake Tahoe area?

    4) What are the speeds I can expect? Can I watch the occasional YouTube video?

    Thanks,
    Steve

    1. Yes. Same as buying a used cellphone.
    2. This is not a question. Questions end in "?".
    3.
    4. Depending on service, with EDGE, expect 70-135kbps with bursts to 200kbps. Otherwise, you'll get slow dial-up speeds.
