my first laptop has no bluetooth built-in but knowing its benefits, I got bluetooth built in on my seond laptop. if you question if it is worth it to get bluetooth or question what to do with it, here are the realistic things I use:

    1) Connect with my MS bluetooth mouse 5000. finally get rid of my Logitec VX revolution mouse dongle (great mouse by the way, just hate the dongle) it connects within 2 seconds and never disconnect or lag.

    2) connect to my HTC Diamond phone (PDA phone) and use hand-free handset feature. Here is the scenario: my phone located somewhere in my house and I am browsing the web on my laptop on my bed. the phone rings, my laptop pop up asking to answer the phone. I click accept and use my laptop speaker/microphone to communicate (while the phone is somewhere)

    3) connect to my phone (with 3G Data service) to browse the web on my laptop. Here is the scenario: I am on the road and want to read news on my laptop. Using Internet sharing program on my phone, I connect to my laptop through bluetooth Personal Area network (PAN). within seconds, I browse the web almost anywhere and anytime while the phone is in my pocket. look, mom, no wire.

    4) connect to my phone to sync Contacts, photo, files between laptop and phone. Typing contacts on laptop is much easier than on the phone and transfer these contacts to the phone is fast.

    5) send files to my phone in seconds and easy. if I want to send a file on my laptop to my phone (such address), I just right click on the file, select "send to bluetooth device", my phone peep and the file is ready on the phone.

+1. My E90 does the same. Also my ASUS mouse is connected most of the time. I often used both devices at the same time, curtosy of Vista. In XP you can't use them at once.

I've always loved bluetooth for what its good for: gadgets.

I use it for my mouse, and my headphones in fact. Good stereo sound from the headphones.

I also love using it to send files and messages to my other family members computers from in my room. Sent my little brother a song the other day this way.

I have never had a bluetooth device till recently. I figured I would get bluetooth installed in my laptop but I would probably never use it. I just recently bought a bluetooth mouse and man do I love it. NO DONGLE! :D Works perfectly and is very neat. From now on all laptops I get will have bluetooth for sure.

I only use Bluetooth (on my laptop) to transfer files back and forth between my laptop and phone.

I also have a handsfree device I use while driving that pairs with my phone.

My friend says the same thing. I function just fine. If you get used to the cell phone I can see how you can't get along without it. I never got used to one and I really don't want to pay monthly fees for it. My work doesn't require it and I don't want people calling me all the time :)

Fair enough. I meant it in a joking way since I know it's possible to function without one, just not very often anymore. :)

    RANT
I just think people and society convince themselves that they need certain things, when really if they re-evaluate their life they will find they really don't. Most people are not heart/brain surgeons on 24hr emergency call and I am not on 24 hr call support in IT(was before, know all about that ;)) I don't need the phone so it will match my outfit and I don't need the phone to seem important. Maybe I will change one day, who knows. :D ;)

    Hahah ok :D

I'd say few people need a cell phone, but it sure makes things a hell of a lot more convenient. ;)

I plan to get a laptop soon.
I am not up to date on wireless at all.
I see no one mention Bluetooth for a wireless printer - why not?
    Is there no such thing?
Can Bluetooth be added externally (USB port)?
Sorry for these questions, but inquiring minds want to know.

Yes, Bluetooth for printers seems cool. I haven't looked into this but when I build my next machine I probably will. Zapping data to my printer(some day) is another reason I got the Bluetooth as well. I think Bluetooth can be added externally, but don't quote me on this. I need to look into this thing more.... :)

Bluetooth has a fairly short range (~30 feet) which makes it not so good for a home network or a printer far away. Also, the transfer rates are much slower than a standard 802.11g wireless connection (3 Mb/s vs. 54 Mb/s) making it unsuitable for wireless printing. Many more printers nowadays have wireless cards in them so they can print via the standard wireless connection (802.11g).

I have an Asus G1Sn laptop and have just purchased my first ever Bluetooth device - a secondhand pair of Zoom 4383 headphones.

I seem to have to reboot and switch on the headphones more-or-less at the same time, then they connect OK. But...

I get interference, as if tapping/rubbing fingers on an empty cardboard box, it is intermittent, frequent, and seems to be set off by the introduction of new sounds on whatever "track" I'm listening to, be it YouTube music or voices on Sopranos DVD.

I get no unwanted sounds when listening to whatever from the laptop speakers.

Could you tell me if it is definitely the headphones that are faulty, or could the problem be caused by something else? I am (obviously) very close to the laptop.

I don't know the first thing about Bluetooth - or audio for that matter - so I'd appreciate advice in simple language. It feels to me as though I've got faulty headphones.
