Its important to me to have the latest wireless connectivity hardware since I will be studying networking. Is it possible to "upgrade" Bluetooth in some way, or do I need new hardware to use EDR (Enhanced Data rate)?

I believe EDR is a hardware ability, so it isn't possible to get it via software.

Is it easy to swap or add a transceiver later?

Yes, it should be pretty easy.
