What are the key differences of Bluetooth 4.0 and 3.0?

What happens if i use a Bluetooth 4.0 adapter with a Bluetooth 3.0 device? Or vice versa? How will this affect power consumption for both devices?

Bluetooth is backwards compatible. My Bluetooth 3.0 mouse works fine with the 4.0 adapter. The adapter will just operate in 3.0 mode. Likewise, if the adapter is 2.1 like those 2010-2011 laptops, the Bluetooth mouse will operate in 2.1 mode (slower and less energy efficient).

The difference I know in 4.0 is the use of " Bluetooth AMP" which is allows high throughput via Bluetooth. Also, Bluetooth 4.0 has the most energy efficient specification currently and you won't get this feature if you're using a Bluetooth 3.0 mouse.
