Hello All, My thread previously (pay for 10 mb/s but get 30kb/s) listesd problems i was having with my internet (everything downloading at a constant 30 kb/s) and that included bit torrennt. Well today, i thought i would redownload a file that my friend hosts, so i did, and instead of downloading at 30 kb/x, i downloaded at 1 kb/s. So whats up??? I can download off websites at 1 meg/s but bit torrennt is 1kb/s?

I use Charter, and it says that it does not limit BitTorrennt clients.

Do you use a router? If so, make sure it's configured properly to give your BitTorrent client an open port.

You sure the torrent isn't dead and there are plenty of seeders and leachers?

I have found that if you actually set a limit to the download speeds you can get a better speed from it. Try limiting the DL to say 100kbs if it max's that notch it to 120kbs or down if needed. It does help trust me. When i have been on my college internet of like 16mbit i have been DL at those speeds and this method helped me a lot.

*Yes i know i shouldn't be downloading the Alien Quadriligy in classes but i couldn't resist!*

If you're on a wireless router, you'll need to make sure that it is correctly configured to allow your bittorrent client to access the outside internet. This is known as port forwarding. Read some of the following for an idea of how to do this:

    http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/223583

Also, I would recommend you use the powerful and fast utorrent client. If you choose to, here's a great tutorial on how to set it up:

if just your friend is hosting the file, then you are limited by his bandwidth.

    keep that in mind.

If you have a cable modem, then both your router and modem have firewalls that will close your ports.

I highly recommend utorrent, you can do a connection test that will automatically configure good settings, and it will check to see if the port is open. If it isn't then at least we know where to start.

We need to know if you have a firewall or any other reason your ports might be shut.

You aren't limited by 9862 kb/s. So that didn't help much.

LOL dont use BitLord for one. Alot of trackers block it. You can try BitComet (BitLord is a rip off BitComet). However BitComet gets blocked sometimes too because it is very leecher friendly. You can get crazy downloads with just 15Kbps upload. Anyway I use BitComet however UTorrent is probably the best right now.

Anyway I would set static IPs and port forward. Port forwarding helps alot. Also what router do you have?

You use a test such as the one included with uTorrent. It's hard to say offhand, because I have no idea what ports your current bittorrent client is using.

Shieldsup by grc can scan your ports.

Or you can use PortScanner. I use this to test my setups and other who are having problems.

Bittorrent is merely a file sharing protocol, like FTP. It can be used to share illegal files, yes, however it can also be used to share legal files.

for instance, i downloaded America's Army from there, i got the torrent from the AA site etc, and the game is free to begin with. Also, i download patches I.E. BF 2142, or BF 2. And i wont lie, i have downloaded illegal things, but not many.

I dont like how people look at torrent files as them all being illegal. :/

It is against the forum rules to discuss or promote blatantly illegal activities, such as cracking or in any way getting an illegal copy of a game to run.

If your using uTorrent, near the bottom there will be a little icon that says whether or not the ports are blocked, a check for open or some kind of warning symbol if its not.

Also since you may be at university its possible they have just recently cracked down on peer to peer file sharing or even ISPs which kill your speeds if they detect it. About six months ago, my campus blocked it completely. At first I thought I was screwed, but in many instances all you have to do is enable Protocol Encryption. I know the option is available in uTorrent and I would assume in most other mainstream BT clients. I don't remember specifically but go into the settings and look under connection or something. Anyway, I hope this works for you as well as it worked for me! :D

Answer: hard to enter torrent club/website (due to limited membership openings) with very fast downloads and access to the newest stuff (i.e videos) before other torrents :)

hope that describes it for you ;)
