Really need a big help on this, I'm looking for a router with the best speed and range possible that has support for windows 8 when it comes to usb file sharing / printer sharing. I bought a D link dir 655 and just found out from tech support that they do not have the printer share drivers for win 8.

I'm looking at the belkin n700 and n900, are they any good?

Can anyone recommend me a good model for my needs? Thanks

You've started from the other end of the ranking- DIR-655 is utter crap and Belkins don't tend to be reliable.

You can check ASUS- they do support USB printing although probably natively rather than through a virtual USB application installed on a computer.
While it may seem better- it isn't. If color reproduction isn't good you can't do anything (and it does happen).

I would rather buy a router that allows you to connect a printer and requires you to install a virtual USB app on a computer(s). This way it works perfectly like it was connected to a computer not the router (meaning in combo devices scanners also work).

I wanted to clear you towards Linksys but it's not exactly clear if their VUSB app supports Win 8 (knowledge base article claims that it doesn't).

TP-Link would be my recommendation. Their USB app supports Win XP/Vista/7 & 8 and they have a separate app for Mac.
The router I would recommend is TL-WDR4300 (see sticky for reasons).

I am using a TP-Link router (a different one) with this virtual-USB printing app (on Win 7 but it's the same one) and it worked fine. Definitely better than native support for printers on i.e. Gargoyle firmware or a print-server on my NAS.

Thank you. I was actually looking at the TL-WDR4300 awhile ago and it was actually the cheaper option. I've read some reviews on the asus RTN66U and a lot of people are having problems with the software as well. What do you call that virtual usb app that you use and is it compatible with windows 8?

I'm not very techy when it comes to these things but in a nut shell, does the WDR4300 work without hitch for the newest version of mac os x and win 8 when it comes to usb printing? If yes I'm picking one up tom!

I don't use Win 8 myself so I can't confirm that it actually works- TP-Link says it does, and it does work fine on Windows 7 on my computer.

It's called USB Printer Controller and it's available for download on TP-Link's website along with firmware and manuals if you choose "downloads" for a router that supports.
That is how it looks open (it adds itself to startup and only shows an icon in the tray- the screenshot shows what it looks like if you click on the icon in the tray)
