    Hi there,

I should be receiving my new laptop today and am looking to get a wireless router. Unfortunately I am working with a rather limited budget, so I am looking for a 802.11g router that is $50 or less. If there is a more expensive one that occasionally goes on sale for $50 or less I may be interested in that as well.

    Thanks for your advice.

My experience suggests that you steer away from D-Link and Netgear. I have had bad experiences with Netgear wireless routers and HORRIBLE experiences with D-Links.

I have had good experiences with LinkSys.

Like I said, these are my personal experiences and I lean to the cheaper non-N routers (Wireless G).

The Linksys WRT-54GL is pretty good.

Oh, I agree totally! The Linksys WRT-54GL is a god amongst routers for its price. I've had one at my last place, and gave it to my parents. I've used some other routers since (my roommate's Apple Airport and Airport Extreme), and they were pretty good, but I'm going back to the Linksys.

I just bought another one. =P It was insanely reliable.

Something that is faster than on wired than the GL is ASUS WL500G Premium, which is almost the only one working full wired speed (100 Mbps). But the GL (if it is cheaper) is also a good choice, especially if cheaper.

I've got an old D-Link DI-624 (now discontinued) running in mixed 802.11b/802.11g mode that has never given me any troubles.

I would vote for the Buffalo, for $10more you can get the WHR-HP-G54 model with is really nice, and both models support dd-wrt firmware.

The only Linksys model to consider is the GL, stay away from there other models. Unless you just like problems and poor performance

I'll throw in another vote for Buffalo routers. I'm using an HP-G54, and love it. I do regret not spending the extra cash and getting the A&G router though (All of my wireless cards, minus one, work on A).

It was $70 after shipping though, and came with better antennas. Just shop around, and you can find them for a good price.

Well, I just bought the Buffalo HP-G54. Circuit City has it on sale this week for $59.99. I flashed to the tomato firmware and it seems to be running great. Thanks again for all your help.
