What would you say are some of the best wireless routers to be found currently on the market (in the U.S.)?

The TRENDnet TEW-633GR an awesome router. I can game anytime I want to, even while other people are online with YouTube and Myspace, and I've never lagged at all. It's got great QoS.

It's the best router I've ever used. I actually tried a Belkin and two top of the line Linksys routers first, but this one blew them all away for setup and compatibility. Gaming has been perfect, and it's been rock solid. It's been running for months now without a reboot, and it has never dropped a signal.

I highly recommend you look into this one.

It hasn't been made yet. I think the Apple Airport Extreme is the best one of the 11n's currently out there. As for 11g, Buffalo WHR-HP-54G on dd-wrt.

I'm basically just looking for the best one that will allow the most trouble-free experience of using a laptop in the home in any part of the house.

That hard to choose because some house construction can kill a signal and placement is key. That is why I use a AP, so I can position it in the right location to get good coverage. I've see some users try to setup the router right behind the furnace unit, ref, oven .... These do not penetrate steel very well at all. Having them down low huts too. I like them at least 5' high with not obstruction. In most all cases the placement is in a bedroom or home office that is on the opposite side of the house where they want to use wireless, not the best solution.

In general most any will work with the exception of a few models. Don't consider any thing BELKIN, and stay away from the Linksys WRT54G. & GS models. These are the units that cause all of the problems in general. 11b will cover most DSL connection, very slow internally. 11g is the best for the avg users. If you moving large file the 11n may be of benifit, but still no where as fast as Giige Wired connection. If you are on need speed between pc you need a router that will give you GigE ports. 99% of the users do not need this, 100baseT is good enough. Of all of the routers out there Apples Airport has the least problems. They seam to work like you expect apple products do. And the Airport Extreme is the only 11n router with 2 seperate radios. Not the dual radios that every one else use. But also the most expensive...

Buy locally were you can take it back if it does not work. This is the best option if you concern about it not working. I have had to setup several homes with more than 1 AP to provide coverage. So there is no 1 router that will provide coverage 100% of the time. No 2 house are the same. But all can be setup with a wireless that will give you coverage. The worst thing is cordless phones 2.4 ghz.

I have tested 3 system in my house, all 3 will cover my 2400 sqft home, from 1 extreme to the other. Though it does drop off in one area. Where it has to shoot through 2 layers of brick. The reason I position them where this doesn't come into play.

If you want optimum performance you must be willing to position it any where in the house. Which may require you to run some wires.

I have a D-Link DIR-655 with a laptop with an "g" card and the connection is excellent. The laptop (Dell) even connected to the network right out of the box. I didn't need to change any settings. The network card isn't even a D-Link. The speed might be even better with a D-Link "n" card. The router has the reputation for being one of the best.

D-Link just came out with the DIR-855 which is supposed to be better, but it is pricey.
